(More customer reviews)After a reload of the OS, my old HP laser was no longer compatible with my Mac computer, so I went looking for a color laser that did duplex printing (trying to be a bit green). My use is at home for personal as well as some business printing.
The set up was easy and the instructions clear. Printing in B&W single sided is fast and of high quality. I find the color printing to be a bit muted and not photo-like, but still acceptable. The biggest negative is the duplex printing. It works, but... When I select two-sided printing, it takes forever to print. It is so slow that I have given up using it completely. As I was hurrying out of the house on a road trip, I tried to print a Google map in duplex, and it took so long I simply left the house without the map. I don't know what is going on inside, but this is so bad I'm shocked it ever was released.
Once I ignore duplex printing, and treat it like a nice feature I will rarely if ever use, then I am generally satisfied with the printer and recommend it for the price.

(More customer reviews)I have owned the MFC-9420CN, but you might want to read this before purchasing any Brother printer. I have had this machine for about a year it cost over $1,000 and is suppose to be for business. This machine is in my home and I do use it more than probably most homes, but not nearly the amount a buisiness would use. After I print about 100-200 copies the machine overheats and needs to take a very long break, sometimes overnight. Make sure you read the entire manual. You need to know how heavy of paper you can use. It won't even take standard coverstock 67lbs. It will only take up to 55 lbs. This machine jams all the time, both at the paperfeeder on top as well as the papertray on the bottom. I have made many calls to Brother. I do get to speak to a live person; however, they are not all trained very well. One problem took them a week to fix, many many phone calls and a guy coming to my home twice. I will give them credit for taking care of the problem and not charging me anything. My most recent problem was with a toner cartridge of theirs. Read the fine print, they only guarantee their cartridge for 90 days with a receipt. So, now I'm out $100, yes, that is how much their cartidges costs. Think twice before purchasing any printer, read the fine print and do a lot of research.

(More customer reviews)This extra paper tray was a cinch to install. Just set the printer on top of it into pre-set slots. The printer takes care of recognizing the unit. It adds capacity and flexibility. I use mine for either stationary or checks to be printed, while keeping the other tray for standard white paper. I use the printer wirelessly, and this paper tray has performed flawlessly. I'm very happy with it.

(More customer reviews)I purchased the '4070' when I was getting tired of paying for the ink cartridges in my HP DeskJet 6840, especially for 'everyday' home printing (online order confirmations, homework, drawings, etc.) I was also looking for a printer to operate on a Mac network. This one is great! The wireless feature allows you to 'plop' this thing down wherever there's a power cord and setup is fairly easy. It's a single-pass unit (e.g. color and B&W printing are the same print speed) and has duplexing built in. Does a 'realistic' job with color photos (not overly saturated). I don't think it's too noisy as previous reviews have stated, but it's certainly not as quiet as an inkjet. The cartridges are neatly laid out in a removable 'drum' tray, making changeout that much easier. I particularly like the LCD display with 3 backdrop colors (green for 'everythings okeydokey', amber for 'I'm in maintenance mode, so don't bother me' and red for 'Help!'. This screen tilts out so you can read it more easily as you walk by it. There are some notes for those Mac (maybe windoze too???)folks that I'd like to bring up:
1) get the latest firmware update - especially for PDF files, the first version of firmware caused all sorts of problems where files didn't print at all. It may not be an issue, but as I got one of the first ones out I got the original firmware version.
2) memory - get more! Especially if you use the BR3 (Brother's PostScript3 emulator) you'll need at least another 64 MB just to make it work. There may be some confusion as to which memory it takes, but the notch in the connector indicates that it's an SDRAM. I pulled memory out of an old laptop I was parting out and works fine.
If you're looking for a cheaper, water-resistant printout, especially if you need duplex, this is your printer!

UPDATE - almost 2 years later and still running strong. I'd recommend locating the 'TN-115' series of cartridges as the 'TN-110's don't last nearly as long. Unfortunately, many traditional brick-and-mortar stores only carry the 110's

Brother HL-4150CDN High-Speed Color Laser Printer Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this printer 1 week ago. As per one of the other reviewers, this unit has some heft to it. It comes with full cartridges, not starter cartridges. The color and sharpness are excellent. I've been using a monochrome HP 1020 laserjet for the last few years. there's a definite improvement in the sharpness of the text. When the machine comes out of its sleep mode, it is louder than I anticipated, and was even a bit shocked at first. Also, it takes about 15 sec to print its first page. I got this for about $280 through Staples and am pleased with the price paid and the performance of this unit. I expect many years of use, which is strictly in the home setting. Setup was simple. This is networked to my home network though an ethernet cable. I have 1 computer running Window 7 and 2 others running Win XP home. all of them found the printer on the network without any glitches. It was much easier to set up than trying to "share" a non-networked printer. I gave it 4 stars because of the noise level. In fairness, I have nothing to compare it to in its class. For the money paid, I think this is a better built unit than the HP 2025, which also costs more, and the cartridges for the HP cost twice as much as the Brother, though there is no drum to replace in the HP since the drum function is built into each cartridge, hence its price. A new drum for this brother runs about $150 but i don't expect that it'll need replacing for few years or so. I can live with that! Hope this helps

Brother TN-115BK High Yield Black Toner Cartridge for Brother HL4040CN,HL4070CDW Series Review

One thing though, after the first warning of these toners being low I take them out and check the little round window to see if there is still toner. If there is, I wind back the gear with a peg on it back to its original position. I recently did this with all three colors as it was reported they were going low. After winding back the gears, the printer performed perfectly for another month with a moderate amount of color printing. Finally, the low toner warnings went off again and since there appeared no more toner, I installed new ones. I have a closet full of these consumables and look forward to many great years printing with these printers. (We have 6 of them)

Hidden Menus for Brother 9840cdw-
**Toner Reset Menu - Open front door of printer. Press the 'clear' button once or twice. There are two capacities for each color. It will start counting down from whichever you choose.
**Everything Else Reset Menu - Press '3' and '9' at the same time. Hidden reset menu will appear. Select item, select reset.
