(More customer reviews)This printer uses all ink colors even if you don't print! Every so often it primes the ink through all the cartridges. So yes, your friend can be using everything even if she never prints black.
Worse yet, as previously mentioned, as soon as ANY ink color goes low it will stop printing all together. Forget trying to get out those last few copies - it shuts down and refuses to even try even if ink is sloshing around in the low cartridge. If magenta is low, it won't even print out a standard black text.
The separate colors were a good idea, but it uses all the ink so fast that you are constantly buying all the new cartridges anyway.

(More customer reviews)I only use genuine Brother refill cartridges for my printer. I never have to worry about my printer clogging up or what colors I am going to get. The colors run vibrant and true. You should see the color photos. They are difficult to distinguish from those that come from Snapfish. My in-laws are amazed that my photos were not professionally developed. Other printed materials, like cards and documents, are sharp.
I have tried other inks in my printer before and nearly ruined my printer when it started clogging up. The colors were also off. No more. Only the best for my printer.

UPDATE: I can usually save money buying the multipacks. Some multipacks also contain black, which I prefer.

(More customer reviews)Unfortunatly the Brother MFC 3240c (and other models also I believe) will not function if any of the inks run out. Also unfortunatly when the 3240c cleans its heads it does so by running ink through the print head, yes it uses ink even if you never print. Again unfortunatly it automatically cleans the print head occasionally. So even if you print you can still run out of ink and the machine shuts down. Fortunatly there is a solution. There is some kind of optical sensor in the 3240c that "sees" how much ink in in the cartridge. You can disable the ability of the sensor to see how much ink is in the cartridge by putting some dark colored tape over the clear part of the LC41 cartridge. The cartridge has one side that you can kind of see through and see the amount of ink inside. That is the side that you need to put the tape over. It is not flat so you will have to mold the tape the shape of the cartridge or it will not fit back into the printer. Once this is done the 3240c thinks you have a full ink cartridge and it will work just fine. This also enables you to use all of the ink in the cartridge. The machine will tell you you are out of ink before it is completly empty. Happy printing!
