(More customer reviews)From the specs, this Brother multi-function printer has a lot going for it. In the home or workplace, it falls far short.
I use this printer in a busy home office. After two months of heavy use, here are my thoughts and obervations on it:
Printer: The specs say up to 30 ppm (pages per minute) b&w, 25ppm color. After it warms up, I'd say it never went above 10 ppm even in b&w. Even on its highest quality, it disappoints. Text is clearly legible, but not something I'd feel good about showing a client. Color is woefully slow, and lacks both richness and clarity.
Scanner: From a mechanical perspective, both the ADF and the flatbed actually work quite nicely. However, the old version of Paperport that it includes is slow, and creates HUGE files. OCR quality isn't worth using. I purchased ReadIRIS separately, and have been delighted with its speed and accuracy on this MFC.
Fax: Works well. Could use more menu detail.
Summary: If your most important need is a printer, look elsewhere. If you need a backup printer, but a decent scanner, this is pretty good, once you get better software.

Brother MFC-685cw Color Inkjet Multi-Function Center with Wireless Network Interface Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Brother MFC-685CW before there were any reviews for it. It was a toss up between the cheaper Brother MFC-665CW and the more expensive Brother MFC-885CW. I went to the Brother website to do a side by side comparison of the 3 printers and I found that the Brother MFC-685CW and the Brother MFC-885CW were almost identical in every way so I decided to get the MFC-685 because the price was right. Though I was wary because like I said there were no reviews for it. I must tell you, I don't regret getting this printer at all. It was a lot smaller than the gigantic Canon Pixma MP530 printer I was replacing. Getting rid of the old printer and getting this one in its place really freed up a lot of space on my desk. Because of it's size, I'm able to position the printer anyway I want now. Though it's a bit heavy, that's not a problem because I don't have to pick it up too often. The other reviewer said the printer is intended to be left on all the time. No it's not. I turn mine off whenever I turn my computer off or when I don't need it. There's no problem and all my settings are always the same no matter how many times I turn the product on or off. He also said that this model is around 3 years old. Amazon and his info is wrong because this model came out last year. But I do agree with most of his other points though ;o).
Now for the important stuff, the features. I think this printer is great. There's a bit of a learning curve to figure out some of the features and somethings you may have to refer to the manual in order to use them until you familiarize yourself with the printer. I made sure I used all of the functions of this printer and everything works well. The Brother MFC-685CW has a lot of positives but this product is not perfect so of course it has some negatives.
Positives:
- One of the smallest All-in-Ones that I've ever seen
- All the controls are in the front. You don't have to get up out of your chair to do anything. Everything is at your fingertips. No reaching around the side, back or inside of the printer to do anything. My favorite fingertip feature, being able to change the ink from the front without have to lift up the lid and reach inside the interior of the printer. To change the ink all you have to do is open the cap in the front, pop the ink in and that's it.
- It's wireless. I've got my laptop hooked up to this printer wirelessly and it prints out flawlessly just as if it were connected to the printer directly. The setup was pretty easy. Everything took about 10 minutes or so.
- I like that there's a speaker phone so that you don't have to pick up the receiver when sending or receiving a fax.
- The corded handset and it's base can be removed from the printer entirely, making the printer's width even smaller. The printer comes with
an extra cap that you can place on the spot where the handset and the base were removed so that it looks like they were never there. Very cool.
- It takes most types of media cards so if you don't want to hook up your camera via USB cable and you would rather take out your media card and view and print your pictures that way, you can.
- The printer has a color screen, which is especially useful when you put in your media card and you want to view or make any adjustments to your photos before you print them.
- You can preview your fax before sending or receiving it.
- Prints documents almost immediately. No long thinking or waiting time.
- You can use LC51 compatible inks. You don't have to use Brother's. The ink monitor recognizes them as the official inks.
- Printing with the black ink could be a tad bit sharper but it's still nice. This also all depends on the type of paper you use and the print settings. I've printed photos and they come out quite nice on this printer. The heavier the paper you print on, the better your prints. I would recommend 24lbs(standard inkjet paper weight) or higher. Though printing on 20lbs. is decent.
- The speed depending also on the print settings is pretty fast. The speed on "Normal" printing could be a little faster. I have my printer
set to "Normal Fast", I have "Slow Drying Paper" checked, and I also adjusted the "Color Enhancement" settings, in order to get nice prints
from this setting. If you don't do this, the prints at the "Normal Fast" setting aren't that great. Set at "Normal Fast", my prints come out in a flash.
- Ink monitor is placed in the taskbar of your computer so that you can always check your ink status.
Negatives:
- No duplex printing. No worries if you, like me, don't use this feature too often.
- A little weird and cumbersome putting in 4x6 photo paper. It's not a matter of opening or taking out the tray and putting in the photo paper. It involves a lot of maneuvering and adjusting when in reality it should not be so complicated.
- Printing photos is slow and the photo quality is not all that great. Photos appear dull and dark and not vivid at all. I've tried various settings from using the default factory setting to manually adjusting the settings, still no luck. Unless my printer is defective, this what I'm experiencing.
- The ink monitor is not 100% accurate and not that smart. I found that sometimes when I take out any one of the inks cartridges, even if it's half full, put it back in and it asks you on the printer screen if you just put in a new cartridge and you said that you did, it will register the cartridge as being new ink. This is very bad because I never know when I'm going to run out of ink because the monitor is incorrect. Capping off this fact is that Brother cartridges are all enclosed and not clear so you can't even look at the cartridge to know how much ink you really have unlike say, a Canon ink cartridge. Canon cartridges are clear so you can tell you're out of ink without the help of an ink monitor.
All in all, I really like the Brother MFC-685CW and I'm glad I decided to purchase it. It's attractive looking, pretty easy to use and very compact for an All in One. I've always used the Brother faxes but was a little wary about getting a printer from them but I've been very please so far. I was a Canon printer lover but after my previous Canon flaked out on me, I decided to give Brother a try and I'm glad I did.

(More customer reviews)I went shoping for a new printer a few months ago, originally shopping for a color injet (NOT All-In-One) for my start-up business. I wanted to be able to be able to give my cliets color prints of simple things like invoices, diagrams, or product photos.
When I got to the store, I came accross the MFC-5840CN by Brother and was amazed by the number of features for under $200. I had a Lexmark X85 I was replacing and that thing was a pile of junk, and made me cautious of All-In-Ones. After a few days of online research I decided to buy the Brother (my first Brother product) printer and let me say this think is awesome!
For a printer it does a good job, with good B&W as well as color prints. Now I have not tried photo paper, but it prints better then I expected and seems good (I'm not a photographer- I just want some color in my documents!). I REALLY like the fact that it has built-in 10/100Tx networking as well because I do have a few computers as well as a wireless laptop I use it from (BOTH PC and Mac).
As a Fax machine the MFC once again does a good job. I was suprised that the machine supports the "Distinctive Ring" feature and has not failed once to pick up my distinctive ring number I use as a fax line. It also has not once picked up my regular voice ringer. I can tell the fax machine as well as copier which paper tray to use as well, which is cool. I very much like the auto-feeder it makes everything that is more then one page that much easier to copy and fax.
I have used the fax-from-pc and that works great too. From wired and wireless computers around my house I can send faxes, print, and access the memory card slots!
In conclusion I must say that this is a excelent printer, especially considering the price. I have also bought two for some clients who like it very much with no problems so far. I hope this helps you!

Brother MFC-465CN Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer with Networking Review

(More customer reviews)I can't be happier about finally being able to take a sledge hammer to the festering pile of... err... that is, the HP PSC 1410 All-in-One Printer (Q7290A#ABA) I've been chained to for the past two years. This new Brother MFC-465CN is *everything* that the HP PSC 1410 is not -- it's quiet, it's fast, it's insanely easy to use, and (the single most important feature of all, in my opinion) it doesn't install hundreds of megabytes of useless bloat-ware and a dozen memory- and cycle-pig services on your computer when you install the printer driver.
I've got the MFC-465CN plugged into my LinkSys WRT54G wireless router, with wireless NIC's on five Windows boxes. It took me less than a minute per machine to install the driver, and (*gasp!*) it didn't add any services! Or tool tray garbage! Or auto-run garbage in the registry! My prayers had been answered! I wept for joy!
Regarding the other reviewer comment about slow printing, I have the feeling that your mileage may vary depending on how things are connected together. I just dumped this here page (lots of color, graphics, images, and whatnot) to the MFC-465CN and it took just a hair over 30 seconds from start to finish. Much, *much* faster than my old FrankenPrinter. And the print quality is *superb*, for both text and images. No idea how photos will look, but my bet is that it'll do an excellent job of it.
Also no clue about how long I'll be able to go before I have to replace the ink cartridges, but ANYTHING has to be better than the FrankenPrinter, which ate a black cartridge every three or four weeks... even though I rarely print more than a page every other day (!!!).
Just the mere thought of being able to nuke all of that HP bloat-ware on my computers and disembowel that PSC 1410 gives me great pleasure. And I think I'll jump up and down on its carcass a couple of times, and sprinkle some salt on it, just to make sure it doesn't rise from the dead.
UPDATED, 16JAN08: I've been working this printer like a plow-horse for the past month, churning out all sorts of stuff (maps, photos, mailing labels, etc.) and I *still* love the bejabbers outta it. I've dumped at least a dozen full-color Google maps, a dozen or so photos, around a hundred B&W pages and lots (and lots!) of mailing labels, and as far as I can tell it's NOT EVEN CLOSE to running out of ink -- black or otherwise.
Very happy camper. Loving this printer, and thinking about buying another one and putting it up in the attic, just in case they stop making 'em.

Brother MFC-5440CN Network Inkjet Printer, Scanner, Copier, and Fax Review

(More customer reviews)This is an excellent printer/scanner/fax for the money. I had purchased this as a replacement to an extremely problematic HP 5110.
Install: Installation was extremely easy. Just follow the directions and everything works within about 30 minutes. I really can't stress enough how easy it was to setup this printer. Whether you set it up with a standard USB connection or ethernet/network, the software does everything for you and the software install only takes around 5 minutes.
Software: The software is really simple and easy to use. The downside to this is that it is somewhat too simple. For advanced users that want more options and customizability, they wont find it here. Also, having the preset scan buttons is a little annoying if you like to change your scan options a lot.
I should also note that you can scan/copy things using either your computer or the buttons on the unit. This is very very smooth and allows you do be able to scan things without having to navigate to the ControlCenter on your PC. If you set up the printer on the network it will also even allow you to pick which PC to send the files to.
Printer: Print quality is right on for this price range. This is not a photo printer, but nevertheless printing onto photo quality paper isnt bad. But at the prices you can get digital photos developed at Walmart or Target nowadays, it doesnt really matter.
Scanner: Scan quality is great, scans up to 6000x1200 DPI. Even 300x300 DPI looks great.
Fax: Unfortunately, I cannot comment on this as I have no reason to fax anyone. But if the scan/print quality is any indication, this would work seamlessly as well.
Ink: This printer uses individual C/M/Y/K cartridges. So when one color runs out, you only have to replace that color. The size of the ink cartridges is pretty big, too, so they last longer. The downside to this is that the print head is not replaceable since they are not part of the print cartridges. So you pretty much have to replace the entire printer when it goes out.
Networking: Another GREAT reason to buy this product is that is comes with built-in networking. This is completely unheard of in other brands in this price range and greatly adds to the value of this printer. You can set it up for wireless use or wire it directly to your router/hub. You can also scan images in and send it to any computer on your network ... directly from the printer!
Price: This is in the $ 100-150 price range, which is more or less the low range for AIO printers. In this range, you pretty much have to choose from Lexmark, HP and Brother. Lexmark printers in this range are really cheap and their ink cartridges are overpriced. HP is very problematic, have smaller ink cartridges and are also overpriced. Overall, Brother is the best buy.
Overall: I'm in love. Not only is this the best printer for the money, but this is a GREAT printer/scanner PERIOD. After this experience all my future printers will be Brother brand. I will never buy Lexmark/HP/etc ever again.

Brother MFC-790CW Color Inkjet All-in-One with Wide 4.2-Inch Touchscreen LCD Display and Wireless Interface Review

(More customer reviews)After looking through reviews and googling 'best all in one', I rarely saw Brother mentioned. It was either Canon, HP or Epson. So I first purchased the Epson Aristan 800. The first unit was defective with an error loop, so I replaced it with another. It's a nice printer overall with the added bonus of touchscreen, but the fax functions were poor, the paper tray was flimsy and it was a bit too large for where I wanted to put it.
So I returned it, walked around the printer isles for an hour and came upon the Brother MFC-790cw. It had wifi, touchscreen, a phone, a real dial pad, a smaller footprint and a much cheaper price.
So after using it for a week, i'm really happy with the purchase. The wifi software was very easy to setup, and I had no problem installing it in Windows beta 7 unlike the Epson Artisan 800. Receiving and sending faxes is easy as pie. Normal and glossy photo print qualities are very good. And the unit overall looks solidly built.
The only two drawbacks I found was the above normal noise and the below normal print speed. But i'm not running a business with the need to print volumes of documents in a short time, so it's not really much of a concern.
This is an excellent AIO for personal use at a great price.

(More customer reviews)I've had the Brother MFC 4350 for 7 years and loved it. I finally decided to upgrade to a new Brother MFC 7225N. The printer installed very easily. The printer quality is very good and overall, I think I'm happy with the purchase. Two pet peeves:
1) The machine is much louder than the MFC 4350 when its printing. If you have home office, you probably can't print a large document and talk on the phone at the same time because of the noise.
2) The top and the bottom of the printed pages curl up. For home use, this will probably be ok. If you are printing proposals or official business-related stuff, this may annoy you. (not as professional looking)

(More customer reviews)I must be the only person who so far has a defective ink cartridge after only a week of use. It started streaking. Then it printed faded and unreadable. Now it's not printing in black at all - and I only installed the 1 black cartridge about a week ago. I don't do a tremendous amount of printing - a page, two or three some days, or maybe a few more once a week, if that, and other days I don't print at all - so this shouldn't have happened so soon. Now I'm afraid to see what happens when I attempt to use the other black cartridge and the 3 color cartridges I also bought. At the time I made my purchase, it was a great deal price wise. The ink was about $10, and with shipping it came to about $15 for the 5 cartridges vs. the $50-80 I would've spent in Office Max depending on my rewards and coupons, etc. Now the price has gone up - so if you can afford to spend twice, or three, times the price for ink and get the recommended by the manufacturer ink - do so! When I use the Brother LC51 ink, my cartridges last me about 1 or 2 reams of paper, depending on my printing. With this cheap stuff, I got thru less than 40 pages of printing, and then wasted about a dozen pages of paper trying to get the cheap ink to print. I'm back to the Brother ink cartridge now, and the printer is working properly again. It comes down to that you get what you pay for in my case, and I'd be happy to get that money back!

Brother MFC-5890CN Professional-Series Color Inkjet All-in-One with Networking and Large-Size Printing Review

(More customer reviews)This is a great printer--I give it 5 stars because it works AS ADVERTISED. This is HIGH PRAISE compared to the 6 other printers I've owned over the last 5 years (1 Brother laser, 1 Samsung, 4 HP's; only the Brother laser is still in use; to be fair, one of the HP inkjets still functions, but I have chosen to stop paying $60 every 4 months for ink). In looking for a replacement color printer, my search criteria were high-capacity ink cartridges, fax capability, ADF (auto document feeder) for scanning, and networkability. (Ideally, installation would be automated and wouldn't load my computer with megabytes of software that I didn't want...sigh). I first looked at the Brother MFC-490CW which, on sale, would have been 60% of the price of the MFC-5890CN. Second, I looked at the HP J6480 AIO. I am at the end of my rope with HP printers (I could write pages on this) but it looked at it for 2 reasons: (1) 2 different sales people at 2 different stores said over and over that the HP had much better image/print quality than the Brothers and (2) it does have a high capacity ink cartridge option (74XL, 75 XL). Then I looked at the MFC-5890CN which I decided to buy. I did consider the Brother MFC-6490CW, but it would have been an extra $50 to $100 dollars and it's HUGE (too big for my work space).
I think the Brother MFC-490CW is an awesome printer. It has good ink capacity (LC61 cartridges) but does not work with the high-capacity cartridges (LC65 series 25% more expensive for double ink) that it's big brothers can use (5890CN and 6490CW). I REALLY WISH that the MFC-5890 I purchased included the 6x4 photo paper bypass tray that the MFC-490CW has (my only disappointment with it! maybe Brother will offer an accessory tray with that feature). It also has built-in wireless networking, which sounded like a big deal but, as I discuss below didn't add anything--I am using the FULL capabilities of the MFC-5890CN wirelessly through my wireless router as I explain below. I decided to go with the MFC-5890CN over the MFC-490CW mainly so that I could use the LC65 high-capacity ink. Printing on 11x17 paper may also be useful to me. (It can NOT scan 11x17 documents as another review said. I guess that person never looked at it in the store as it's obvious that the scanner glass is only 8.5 by 11 and not 11 by17 like the MFC-6490CW.) It also has double the warranty period, 2 years, and double the duty cycle--I hope this means it really will last longer but only time will tell.
I looked at the HP J6480 AIO very carefully. The price was the same as the MFC-5890CN. This was the only similar HP printer that I found that had high-capacity ink. It has built-in wireless networking. It does NOT have a color LCD screen. To test the image quality, I went to the store and made color copies of the same test documents (pictures my children made) with the HP J6480 and the MFC-5890CN, both on highest quality. The Brother MFC-5890CN was very much better than the HP. Do the test yourself--my Staples in town has all the printers plugged in and loaded with paper. The only benefit of the HP J6480 is an automatic two-sided printing feature. However, this isn't too great a feature with inkjet as there is a pause to "let the ink" dry before it flips the page. Again, I tried this at the store--it was really annoying b/c if you only copy 1 side, the printed page pops out, the printer status screen says "Please wait, ink drying" or something like that, a few seconds pass, it sucks the page back in to flip it over, and then you can have your copy. If I want to duplex to save paper, I'll just use my laser.
So I bought the MFC-5890CN. I have had several nice surprises since. First, it prints GREAT! photos using the ink provided. I bought the Brother "innobella" 4x6 glossy photo paper ($5 for 20 sheets), put it in the paper tray, put the memory stick from my camera into the printer card-reader slot, selected the picture I wanted on the LCD, clicked print, and after about a minute, out popped at beautiful borderless 4x6 glossy picture that, to my eye, was about as good as any photo I've seen (from another printer or Walgreens). I was very, very, very happy how easy this worked and how good the picture looked. It worked just as well using "Picture Bridge" which just means you connect the camera straight to the printer with a USB cable. Also, I used the built in red-reduction feature and I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked (this was a portrait type picture with one person's face in the picture). I can't vouch for pictures using other photo paper--you see a lot of postings that it's better to match paper and ink. Second, I really like the Paperport software. I can scan directly into PDF and organize my files easily into different folders. Third, the color LCD screen is extremely useful, especially with direct photo printing. After 2 weeks, there are only two negatives--(1) I wish it had a built-in tray for photo paper as this would save time (it's little brother the 490CW and it's big brother the 6490CW both do) and (2) whoever designed the ink placement doesn't have any small children around--my 3-year-old can pull the little door open and it's hard for him to resist trying to pull out the colorful ink cartridges (most of the HP inkjets hide the ink deeper inside the printer).
INSTALLATION TIPS: I have an desktop running XP with Norton security suite; this connects via Ethernet to a Belkin Wireless router. I have a laptop running Vista also with Norton security suite that connects to the Belkin router wirelessly. I connected the Brother MFC-5890CN to the Belkin router with a direct Ethernet connection. I turned off the Norton Firewall and ran the standard Brother installation including Paperport software. (Note that I run the Norton firewall but keep the Windows firewall disabled on both computers.) Everything worked fine including Scan to functions selected from the printer. When I turned the Norton firewall back on, it stopped working. I add the printer "Node Name" to the Norton "Trusted Site list:" and everything now works. (The Node Name is a 12 character alpha-numeric code found on the printer as follow: click Menu button, scroll to "Network" and select, select "Wired LAN", select "TCP/IP", Node Name is at the bottom of the list--leave off "BRN", e.g. my Node Name is 008077D3C1B5--maybe it's the same for everyone--I don't know. I tried using the printer IP address found at the same location but this did not work. To add to Norton "Trusted Sites" do this: open Norton security suite by double-clicking icon in system tray, find "Internet Security and Firewall Options" link and click in the "Settings" section, click, "Trust Control" on left, click "Trust" tab on top, click Add button to add. I think it's all easier to do than it sounds.) It shouldn't be so complicated but it seems like this kind of tweaking is inevitably necessary if you use Norton and Windows and want to network. My laptop was actually easier. I again turned off the firewall while I installed the software (unplug your WAN/cable/DSL line while the firewall is off). Even though the laptop connects to the router wirelessly, when I selected "Wired LAN Connection", it found the MFC-5890CN just fine, loaded the drivers, and everything works fine. This includes walking up to the printer, loading documents in the document scanner, selection Scan To on the printer menu, selecting my laptop from the list, clicking OK, etc. To me, it seems like it works as well as it would if the printer itself had built-in wireless networking. I have not yet tried the Fax to PC function to the wireless laptop.
One other thing, built-in scanning options on the printer include Scan to Email, Image, OCR, File, FTP. These all scan to the Brother "Control Center 3" program; you can change these virtual buttons to scan to Paperport via the XP or Vista control panel (double-click Scanners, select Properties, etc.) This is a bit buggy with Vista but works perfectly on XP.
