(More customer reviews)I have owned the printer for about two months now and I am satisfied with the purchase. It is hard to find another printer in this price range (I paid $315 at Amazon) with similar feature set. I use it on my wireless LAN at home with both PCs and my MacBook Pro, and have not had any major trouble so far. I did not dare to setup the security features, so I can't relate to the other reviewer who had problems with enabling them on the printer. I rely on MAC address filtering on my access point for the time being.
Now, there are 3 aspects of the printer I did not like a whole lot :
1. Fan noise.
2. Clicking sound during warm-up.
3. Surge of current generated by the printer upon startup.
I emailed the tech support, and received an answer promptly, to my satisfaction, so I decided to keep it.
Overall I rate it with 5 stars based on the price/performance.
The answers from tech support are below for your reading pleasure.
The fan will run until the fuser is below 100 degrees Celsius. Make sure that the printer has adequate space on each side for proper ventilation,at least 3 to 4 inches around all sides. The HL-5200 Series machines may make a clicking, ticking or popping noise when the machine is warming up, in standby mode or cooling down after making copies. This noise occurs when parts within the fuser
Unit (part of the machine that adheres the toner to the page) expand and contract as part of the normal heating up and colling down process.
PLEASE NOTE: This noise ONLY occurs when the machine is warming up, is in standby mode or when cooling down AFTER printing a document. This is normal operation and not an indication of a malfunction of the machine. If the noise is accompanied by a machine malfunction (for example: a paper jam, machine error, loud grinding when making prints etc), please contact the Brother Customer Service department at 1-800-276-7746.
Lights flickering or dimming when using the printer can be explained by the following information. The average operating current for the printer, as determined by Underwriters Laboratory (UL) testing is 5. amps. However, when the fuser is cold or when the printer is warming up,it will jump to 7.5 amps. This is a design element to enable the printer to get ready for a quick time to first print. The power spikes up to ready the printer quickly. Sometimes the spikes will cause lights to flicker as the power is drawn.
The printer has been tested and approved by UL. The printer will not damage home wiring. UL has confirmed that the home circuit breaker would trip before any damage would occur. This design element ensures the printer performs 30 pages per minute printing and fast wake up time. This design cannot be altered and is not an indication of a manufacturing defect. We do recommend not to share the same power circuit with other high-power appliances, particularly an air conditioner, copier, shredder and so on.

Compatible Refillable Cartridges for Brother Printers Using Lc51/57/960/10/1000/37 Cartridges Review

(More customer reviews)I bought these refillable cartridges for my Brother MFC-260C inkjet printer. The original cartridges from Brother don't last long, and they are expensive. The are very large refillable cartridges, four in all. They are so large that the printer cartridge door can't be closed, so you have to insert a paperclip or something similar to make the printer think the door is closed. It may not be aesthetically pleasing, but it gets the job done, and you save a lot of money in the process. I've already printed out some color pages, and I can't tell the difference between the original and these, except for the price. You fill the cartridges with the bottles of ink and just insert them like a regular cartridge. They hold much, much more ink, and they are transparent, so you can see how much ink remains. That's something that you can't do with any original cartridge.
I would recommend these to anyone. They are a great value. You won't be replacing your cartridges every few days and spending a fortune.

(More customer reviews)These cartridges have been nothing but trouble. The MFC-6490CW seldom recognizes them. When it does, it thinks they're empty.
In short, these guys didn't do their homework on compatibility. Just because the cartridges snap in doesn't mean they're compatible.
As much as I hate to spend it, I'll be purchasing the brother cartridges from now on.

(More customer reviews)I was very hesitant to buy this product first. Couldn't find any links on how to fill ink and it clearly says no tools required. Once I got it was a very easy to fill the ink and the results were amazing. Highly satisfied.
Procedure to fill the ink in Brother MFC-240C
(1) Use a small knife to cut the paper on the bottom of the catridge. In addition run it across all edges so that it's easy to open the catridge. Make sure you don't run too deep into the cover since it's just plastic sheet protecting the ink inside the catridge.
(2) Open the small round white cover (one that projects outside of the catridge and has no straw in between) which has the black rubber in it using the knife. Remove the very small filter inside the white cover as well.
(3) Start filling ink in that small hole and keep pressing the plastic cover as well. This will push the air inside the plastic cover and absorb the ink. Make sure you don't push too hard else the ink will splash. Repeat this step until it's full.
(4) Put the small filter back and the small white cover with black rubber. Close the catridge. The printer immediately picks it up and starts printing as new.

(More customer reviews)In light of the bad review I was holding my breath in anticipation of trying these cartridges on my printer. I needed to replace the black and yellow cartridges and put printing on hold rather than buying locally. They arrived a few days ago and, since I waited for them, I had a lot of printing to do...both print and graphics. I agree with reviewer #1. I feel bad for reviewer #2 and can only wonder what his problem may have been. Perhaps he simply received a defective cartridge which I'm sure happens from time to time. Let's face it, you get nine refills for less than the price of one black & white. I'm willing to accept an occasional defect.
TO THE POINT: They all work just fine on my printer. I've had no smudging at all and, honestly, they look just as good as the manufacturer's do. I'm going to run through the one's I installed and make sure no problems creep up in the future and then order another set. If I find any problems I will repost with an update.

(More customer reviews)The instructions are fairly clear on how to refill. I didn't buy it here because I couldn't find the other necessary part: the reset gear. Maybe they do sell it here, but to save on shipping, I bought it all directly from LaserTek.
When I poured out the toner from my starter TN-550, there was a quite a bit left. Perhaps there has to be in order to properly charge it to make it to the developer wheel. The instructions tell you to dump any old toner out, so I was quite disappointed in how much I wasted.
In all fairness, you may have to since it has been already charged, I'm not sure. But it does say to not over fill it, so perhaps they do that to make sure you have the right amount inside, as overfilling would either make a mess inside while printing.
Those Brother cartridges have an easy plug to remove to refill, so doing the deed is easy. Will buy again, but I wish I found the gear here. If you already have a OEM cartridge from Brother, i.e. not the starter one you got the printer with, you can skip buying the gear since it has it. You just have to reset the position of it, because that tells the printer to adjust the toner charge to a new cartridge. If you don't, the printouts will be way too dark and it will come out like a dirty old copier print.

I've heard the ink dries out relatively quick, so we'll see how I feel about the product a few months from now. The price is great though, and with 3 refills I shouldn't need more for some time.

(More customer reviews)I also have a problem with the printer creasing envelopes. It appears to shift the flap of the envelope slightly while feeding it through the fuser and the heat and pressure causes another crease about 1/8" offset from the original one.
I returned the first unit that I ordered because of a loud squeaking noise that developed while printing. The second unit also squeaks somewhat (Certainly more than my old mfc-8820D), but it doesn't sound like it's dragging a cat through the manual feed slot.
There's a big difference between this unit and my MFC-8820D in the scanning area. On my old printer, I could input an email address on the screen and it would forward the document to that address. This guy requires you to select a network computer and then sends the document there. A memory resident program needs to be running on the computer to process the received document...which is a worthless waste of memory space about 99.99% of the time when the computer is doing it's normal job. The memory resident process also conflicts with some HP network printer software and crashes on a couple of our systems, thus rendering them unusable with this scanner. Needless to say, the old way of doing it was much better.
In retrospect, and despite the 145,000 pages printed, I probably should have spent the $300 to replace the fuser on my 8820D instead of getting this unit. This one is much faster, but the other trade-offs - the lack of duplexing (known at the time of ordering, but the 8860DN wasn't yet shipping) and the dumbing down of the scanner firmware (unknown until received) are serious handicaps.
Oct 30, 2006 update - After about five month of use and about 20K pages printed, my printer is in the shop being repaired. The printer started making loud snapping sounds, like plastic gears stripping, whenever a page was printed...except that the paper jammed every time. The guy in the service center said that he has another identical printer in for repair and that it's the fuser unit that's shot. That would be easy to fix, except that they're on back-order and won't be available for a while. Sigh. I think my next printer will be an HP.
November 14, 2006 - I have to give Brother Service credit. 1000 pages post-repair and my machine broke again. They're shipping me a new printer. This will be my second replacement unit...hopefully this unit will be more solid as my warranty runs out in April.
November 25, 2006 - update - The replacement unit not only shifts the flap on envelopes, it puts creases all over them, rendering them completely unusable for any purpose. If there was a way to totally unwind this purchase, I would in a second. On the other hand, since design of this unit appears to have all the reliability of an alcoholic after a weekend on the town, I purchased the one year extended warranty.
February 10,2007 - update - Well, the machine is now starting to make loud snapping sounds whenever the paper tray is filled up to the full line. It also jams and refuses to feed paper whenever that happens. The solution (so far) is to only fill the paper tray half-full.
I really dislike this piece of junk...so much so that I bought HP for my new offices.
May 13, 2008 - final update - After limping along in the old office for the last year, the Brother finally died (again). The big question is whether to take it to recycling yard, where they would gently take it apart and salvage the parts, or take it to the local car crusher and watch it receive what it deserves. Alas, my ecological side is coming through and I'll recycle it. Oh well, it would have made a great YouTube video...

(More customer reviews)I always look for compatibles as originals are hugely expensiive. I tried this seller and the combination and work flawlessly, indistinguishable from brand.
Toner lasted less than expected but I was printing graphic scans, so heavy toner use, probably had I printed regular pages it would have lasted the usual N. of pages.
It did not come with instructions.
The drum works also. On my HL-2070N the "Drum" LED kept blinking after the replacement. I called the seller who was very helpful and walked me trough the steps of shutting down the LED (keep the toner door open and press and hold the "Go" button). Had there be instructions (or had I read the Brother manual (!!)) I would have saved a phone call.
Package arrived promptly, will buy again from seller.

(More customer reviews)PROs: The HL-6050D has outstanding text quality at 600 DPI and well over 20 ppm output speed. We haven't tried the 1200 DPI setting since 600 DPI produces very sharp text. The duplex mode is great--it will automatically collate and print booklets of any length. This is a heavy duty printer with many extra features and is well worth the cost. We don't know about long-term reliability yet, since we've only had it for about a week, but it does seem to be well designed and assembled. Easy software start-up on WindowsXP. (Be sure not to connect printer cable until Brother printer install program asks for it.) It's simple to install more memory DIMMs and a network card.
CONs: Somewhat loud when printing, but it's okay for most office setups. Toners are about $90-100 for 7500 pages.
