The price was higher than many of the generic or refilled cartridges, so I took it to be that it was probably an original new Brother cartridge. It was not. It was in fact a generic. It may have worked just fine, but it was the fact that it wasn't represented as I had assumed it to be.

(More customer reviews)I selected this copier/printer based on price, features and the Canon name. I felt like I got "Oh such a deal" at the time I bought mine in Sept.08. It was painless to set up: install the software; plug in the USB cable (not provided) when prompted and click and Voila! I set it up as a shared printer and it is now the main printer in our 4 PC home network.
- Its quick
- Makes clear, clean copies
- Not as quiet as some when printing but definitely not loud
- Top sheet feeder works well, even for multiple sheets
- Toner cartridge was a breeze to install
- Enters and exits its "sleep" mode flawlessly, even from another PC on the network
- Comes with a FULL TONER CARTRIDGE, not a starter. For those who do not know about this: many new printers, especially when being sold at LOW prices, are sold with a toner cartridge that's only good for a few hundred copies at most. Just enough to get you started on day one and to give you time to go buy a "real" toner cartridge. This is often how the mfg's will move more units, by selling them at super-low prices knowing they will make their profits on you returning for toner.
With the rebate I couldn't pass this up, although if I were paying full retail I would have chosen one that also scans to the PC. This one DOES NOT. It is only a printer and copier. I would also consider one that has a Print server and NIC built-in IF I could also connect directly for scanning.
I would recommend this printer.

Great product, It works just like advertised. You really need to get one of these, but it is defiantly better to have separate print heads and cartridges when using this product, otherwise you have to clean the print heads that are attached to the cartridges. If they are separate, you only have to replace the print head when the print quality is noticeably poorer.

Premium Compatible TN350 for Brother Review

(More customer reviews)I ordered this cartridge about ten months ago as the first replacement for my Brother DCP-7020 Multifunction scanner / copier / printer. The original "starter" cartridge lasted much longer than I expected, so it was months before I got around to using this replacement.
First of all, I was disappointed to realize this is a REFILLED cartridge, not a brand-new compatible cartridge as implied in the description. There's nothing wrong with refilled cartridges (as long as they have been handled and refilled carefully), but the customer should know exactly what to expect when ordering.
Secondly, I had concerns about the cartridge I received from the vendor who supplied mine (they called themselves "ShopGoPro"). The outer box arrived crushed, and the flimsy cardboard spacers inside tore in transit and barely held the cartridge in place. Furthermore, the black bag that held the cartridge was punctured and torn. I posted photos on my Flickr account and shared the link with the vendor, who assured me it would work fine or I could return it.
Because of an illness and vacation, the starter cartridge didn't run out for many more weeks, and I didn't try the replacement because I wasn't sure it was a good idea to use and then store a full cartridge.
As it turns out, the refilled cartridge has been merely OK. It worked acceptably at first, but after a few hundred pages I'm starting to see small spots and faint streaks I associate with an older, more worn printer. Probably cleaning will help, but I really intended the first replacement to be a brand-new cartridge so I could rule out the cartridge if I had any service issues in the first year of use.
On the plus side, the price of this cartridge is much lower than the list price of a new one at my local dealer. However, for refills I prefer dealing with a lcal shop so I know how the empties were handled.
So, if you order this cartridge, check the package carefully on arrival, and look closely at the printed pages to ensure you get the quality you expect.

Brother TN-350 Reset / Flag Gear, also for TN-2000 & HL-2700 Review

If anybody has any clues out there, I'm all ears!

REASONS TO BUY THE GEAR: 1. The "Flag" gear resets the printer and tells it when a new cartridge has been installed. 2. A new cartridge prints light when first installed . When the flag gear resets the printers toner low message, it will print at a higher voltage to make up for the low voltage on the new toner cartridge. This increases your print quality and as the cartridges page count increases the voltage slowly diminishes. This ensures perfect quality printing throughout the life of the cartridge until the toner is low and is refilled. 3. The flag gear resets the "Toner End Life" message and will make the printer think you just installed a new cartridge which will reset the voltages to begin a new "cartridge cycle"..

(More customer reviews)To start - I am a staunch advocate for CIS! But let's get down to the brass tacks! I've used CIS on much larger machines, and highly satisfied. So when I saw one available for my Brother MFC 6490 - I watched the videos, read the reviews, I'm sold on the idea. I placed the order.
Ratings: 1) the order was shipped pronto - 5 stars. 2)did the manufacturer put these cartridges in my printer? No. 0 Stars.
Just because the cartridge number is the same, doesn't mean that the physical characteristics of the various machines are identical.
I installed the cartridges per instructions - but the tab that sticks up on the 4th cartridge that activates the door trigger (a) is in the wrong place, and (b) didn't even reach the cabinet of the printer. Then the real problem raised its ugly head - I put a soft stick in the door trigger to test the cartridges - the printer didn't load any ink from the black cartridge, even though it had clicked into place.
To summarize - Vendor 5 stars, Manufacturer 0 (5 stars for concept, 0 for testing)

(More customer reviews)I purchased a 4 pack of the TN350 remanufactured toner and was very pleased at first. After about 1 month of use, dust shadows appeared on my copies. I replaced the drum, thinking that was the problem. Within two months, the problem reoccurred and I had to replace another drum. In the 4 years I've had my printer, when using genuine Brother toner, I had only replaced the drum once. I'd rather spend the extra money on genuine and get clean copies.

The only thing that I wished was offered were new ink plugs, but that was minor but in my book is the difference between four stars and five stars. It took no more than 20 minutes to do, and the instructions were pretty straight-forward - just don't wear nice clothes since toner will "drift" during the filling process. You really can't beat it for the price.
Oh, and don't forget to get the starter gear if you are getting this for an original toner cartridge if you want the Toner light to go away. (I got it, and it did a good job.)

You can't really tell the value of a product like this until it reaches the end of its useful life - or fails to. At our rate, that will take more than a year. And then, hopefully, we'll still have a fully functional second cartridge. the price is worth the gamble. I'm a freelance writer and my wife teaches high school English. She uses our machine instead of the one copy machine assigned to 20 teachers in her department.

(More customer reviews)If you want to save money try this. It is simple to put the toner refill in the cartridge. Not too messy if you're careful. Why spend 20-40 bucks even on a refurbished cartridge? Afterall, that is what the ink cartridge re-manufacturers are doing. The print quality is decent. Does leave a little trace amount of toner in areas that should not have print, but I'll see if it improves with a few more copies. I do think it gives a better print quality than most of the refurbished cartridges that I have bought recently.

(More customer reviews)The instructions are fairly clear on how to refill. I didn't buy it here because I couldn't find the other necessary part: the reset gear. Maybe they do sell it here, but to save on shipping, I bought it all directly from LaserTek.
When I poured out the toner from my starter TN-550, there was a quite a bit left. Perhaps there has to be in order to properly charge it to make it to the developer wheel. The instructions tell you to dump any old toner out, so I was quite disappointed in how much I wasted.
In all fairness, you may have to since it has been already charged, I'm not sure. But it does say to not over fill it, so perhaps they do that to make sure you have the right amount inside, as overfilling would either make a mess inside while printing.
Those Brother cartridges have an easy plug to remove to refill, so doing the deed is easy. Will buy again, but I wish I found the gear here. If you already have a OEM cartridge from Brother, i.e. not the starter one you got the printer with, you can skip buying the gear since it has it. You just have to reset the position of it, because that tells the printer to adjust the toner charge to a new cartridge. If you don't, the printouts will be way too dark and it will come out like a dirty old copier print.
