(More customer reviews)I have owned Brother Printers for quite some time. A major concern with any printer is the cost of the ink/toner. The printer companies have one of the greatest scams of any industry by providing the printer for a very attractive price only to in turn charge insane prices for the ink/toner. The TN-115Bk toner is one of four cartridges for my Brother 4070CDW color laser printer. The cost to replace all four colors is $369 - that is more than the printer cost.In an effort to save money one may be tempted to purchase remanufactured toner which cost about half the price of the OEM version.
The remanufactured toner and ink that I have used in the past was of inferior quality despite the wonderful promises by the remanufacturer of "same or better quality as the originals." Remanufactured toner cartridges' also tended to leak and the toner did not adhere to the pages as well as the OEM versions. Because of my past experiences I try to only buy the original manufacturer products.
The printer came with a very small toner cartridge and it needed replacing in a very short time. I then ordered a high yield replacement the TN-115BK and it didn't last very long at all. I could tell the cartridge had plenty of ink and even see ink in the little window on the cartridge but the printer was telling me to replace it and no matter what I did (shake it a twenty times, turn it upside down) the printer still said replace it. The toner cartridge was clearly half full and this was a way the manufacturer was forcing consumers to buy these outrageously expensive toners.
Out of frustration I searched the internet with a description of my problem and found a couple of very good solutions. I do not think Amazon will allow me to post them, but they are very simple to do (one involves tape) and I was able to get double the use of this toner cartridge! Using the absurd 5% coverage claim, if the cartridge was suppose to give 5000 total pages, then it reportedly gave out easily at the 1800 mark. After applying the suggestions from the internet I literal got at least another 2000 pages from the cartridge. It is very easy to tell when a cartridge is running low because the print quality will severely deteriorate. It was really insane the amount of toner that was still left in the cartridge and the printer was saying to replace it.
All of the manufacturers play the same game and as consumers we have to say enough is enough. There is no way that a gallon of ink should cost more than $1000.00. I brought my Brother Laser color printer when it was on sale and there is no way I could recommend it. The color print rendering is horrific and the toner cost is obscene. Once all of the toner runs out, I will trash the printer before I buy more. That is a real shame because we have enough electronic junk in our landfills and to have to throw away printers because it is cheaper to buy a new one vice buying replacement ink is wasteful in a way that our society cannot afford.
Unfortunately, I am unaware of any printer manufacturer who does not adhere to this model, I do know that when a manufacturer has designed their product to where it costs a small fortune to replace the ink and the consumer only gets fifty percent use of it, then it is a product I would not buy and a manufacturer I could not possible recommend.

(More customer reviews)I am a Mac user and a scientist. In my profession, most of the papers are in the PDF format. This printer handles these documents very well. If you set the resolution to 1200 dpi, the graphics in the papers would look even more impressive and photo-like. It is small and easy to set up so it does not occupy too much desk space. It can do double sided printing without additional gears. It is slow though if your documents are of several MBs in size and contains complex pictures. I have added additional memory to rectify this. From time to time, it has problem handling web pages in Safari.

(More customer reviews)The ink works great with my Brother 2040 printer, and there were very few issues. The only thing that I wished was offered were new ink plugs, but that was minor but in my book is the difference between four stars and five stars. It took no more than 20 minutes to do, and the instructions were pretty straight-forward - just don't wear nice clothes since toner will "drift" during the filling process. You really can't beat it for the price.
Oh, and don't forget to get the starter gear if you are getting this for an original toner cartridge if you want the Toner light to go away. (I got it, and it did a good job.)

Based on my knowledge, following printers' toner (Don't take this word the wrong way, I mean black powdered carbon) are compatible, although I can't 100% guarantee that every OEM toner of following series is compatible with MLT-D104, because there are tons of OEM factories on the market. You can buy the cheapest toner which is listed below to refill your MLT-D104 Toner.

WoW ! This must be the best MFC out there. I have owned several canon, hp, lexmark MFC, photo printers, fax machines etc. This machine is it. All you need is this MFC & a separate photo printer. you are all set.

The tab just needs to be installed all the way to the left. I thought reset meant the gears needed to be turned back, but that is not the case, the key just needs to be intalled in the correct position.

Brother HL-1440 Laser Printer Review

(More customer reviews)I selected this printer over the Samsung ML-1430 and the Hewlett Packard LaserJet 1000. After reviewing all three online and then "live" at an office supply store, I ordered the Brother HL-1440. While the print quality may be similar for all three printers, the Brother HL-1440's build quality, easy memory upgrade path, and cheap consummables made it the clear front runner. Further distinguishing this machine is its superb handling of thicker media. It produces excellent results on cardstock, using a convenient manual feed slot on the front of the machine. Note also that the paper handling of the Brother is, in general, more robust than its Samsung and HP counterparts. The Samsung uses the top-loaded, ink-jet style paper feed system that tends to have less precise alignment. The HP uses a non-removable paper tray that is flimsy at best. The Brother, on the otherhand, uses a standard removable paper tray that is durable and handles envelopes and legal-sized paper just as easily as letter-sized. (And don't discount the handy manual feed for the single envelope.)
Out of the box, USB setup of this unit on a Windows XP Home machine was a snap. The 1440 comes with a fully illustrated easy setup guide that will have you up and running in no time. All XP drivers are available on the disks that are shipping with these machines at the time of this review.
One last note: Don't forget to order a USB (or parallel) cable with your printer!

Brother HL-5240 High-Speed Desktop Office Laser Printer Review

(More customer reviews)Just unpacked and set up the printer. Initial results on 8 1/2 x 11 sheets are great. Excellent quality, good speed, setup went without a hitch.
Unfortunately, no matter what I do it mangles #10 envelopes fed through the manual feeder. I believe I've tried all the pertinent thickness settings in the driver, including envelopes, envelope thin, envelope thick, etc. Every envelope comes out badly wrinkled. The envelopes are ordinary Staples #10s, which I've used without much trouble in a Laserjet5 for years (the heat in that printer does glue the flap a bit, but just lightly. I'm debating returning the Brother HL-5240. The online FAQs from Brother seem completely useless, as they mostly repeat the manual's instructions for inserting the envelopes.
Anyone have ideas on getting around this? Are there special envelopes that will work?
If you don't need envelopes, I'd give this **** or maybe even ***** based on just a few hours use. For envelopes, it doesn't even rate one star, and that makes me nervous about the overall quality.
**UPDATE***: I've managed to get at least some envelopes to print cleanly. Thanks to the comments posted by John Bissel on the HL-5250, as those led me in the right direction. Anyway, what's worked for me is:
* Office Depot sells some #10 envelopes under their own brand name that are specifically listed as working with laser and inkjet printers.
I found those wrinkle a lot less than the many other #10s I tried.
* Use the com-10 size and envelope-thin media.
* Here's the tricky part. Those two fixes get you close, but there's still a bit of a wrinkle on the trailing edge. Thanks to Mr. Bissel, I found the secret pressure release flippers in the back of the printer. Yes they are documented. No, they are not mentioned under envelopes, or in the general guides to the printers features. No they're not in the printed documentation. You have to go into the PDF user guide that gets installed along with the printer (use the Windows Start/Programs to find it). Then you have to look in the troubleshooting section under crinkled pages or some such. Then you find the flippers. It warns you to fip them up only for envelopes, then down, which would be a huge hassel. Like Mr. Bissel, I've had fine luck leaving them up all the time. Perhaps my output on regular pages is a tad less dark.
So, now I'm happy. Printer is great. I should say that I sent a query to Brother's email-based support service. They promise response in 1 business day. It's been 4 days, and so far I've heard nothing.

The toner from Amazon not only printed higher quality, darker prints, it lasted a ton longer than the Brother. I received this unit as a trial a few weeks ago and wanted to wait to write my review until I used it from new to empty and the same with a brand new Brother unit. This Amazon unit states you will get approximately 2,800 pages out of it...I got 3,235. The Brother unit states you will get about 2,500 pages out of it, I got 2,423. As you will see, I got WAY more use of the Amazon toner...and with the price currently being f-o-u-r-t-y even versus f-o-u-r-t-y f-o-u-r for the Brother, a much better deal!! This test was done with just everyday office prints of emails, excel spreadsheets...normal full-page prints (not photos). I have tried refilling toner cartridges, and it is a pain...sometimes it works, other times it is a horrible mess and a waste of time. This cartridge is well worth the money and the few extra dollars it costs over doing a refil saving me a headache.

(More customer reviews)I am always curious about the expectations of other consumers who write reviews, so I will try to detail mine. I specifically bought this printer because I travel frequently for work and spend a lot of time working from a hotel room. The size is fairly compact for a laser printer, and having a laser printer was a must since I print a lot of documents when I am on the road (I have gone through inject cartridges within a few days). Price was an issue since things have way of breaking more frequently when you move them around a lot. The cartridges are $70 or so at Office Depot, so don't buy them there! I have found them here on amazon for around $35 which is more than reasonable. Do yourself a favor and buy a replacement immediately as the cartridge that comes with the unit will run out quicker than expected. The speed and quality of prints is decent, and quite frankly would not have even mentioned it unless other reviewers had mentioned it. For anybody who has never used a laser printer, they have cooling fans and yes the do make some noise, but mine has never run for more than 5 minutes. I have a much older brother at home (it is 10 years old and still works great) that is much noisier and runs for much longer than this model. Quite frankly, I was pleased with how much quieter this model is. One feature that I really like is the auxiliary paper feeder for envelopes or other documents that may require a different paper size than is in the main tray. Ultimately, this is a good unit for the price. I have had it a bit over a month and it has met all of my expectations. If you want and expect a more refined unit, then you may want to consider paying more. Personally, I have no complaints.
