I've been looking for a good laser printer that I could have on my network for a while now. I have a small office and am an aspiring teacher (currently student teaching). When I can't get to the copy machine at school, I wanted something I could use to do some "mass printouts" for my students. I had an old NEC Superscript, but it frequently paused between pages for a breather and was generally slow.
If you don't need the network card (print server) built into this printer, then the 1320 (not 1320n) would be an amazing value! For me, I wanted the networking, so I was willing to spend the extra money. Setup was relatively simple, changing the IP address was easy, and I was up and running, printing from my Windows XP machines AND my MacOS X (10.3.7) machines.
Now for the printer itself. I'm very impressed with the build quality. Printers have been turning into plastic junk lately, but this one still has metal guts, metal supports holding the paper in the bottom tray, etc. Certain parts seem like generic plastic, but overall it has a nice fit and finish.
Print speeds are amazingly swift! The first thing I put this little print-monster through was a 70-copy worksheet for my students. It took sheet after sheet without a pause! It might grab paper just when the previous sheet is half way through because they seem to keep flying out! Duplex printing was a bonus with this unit - handy in a pinch, but it slows the print speed by about 2-3 times - because it pulls the paper back inside and reprints on the other side... Either way, I dare you to find a quality printer like this, with a duplexer for this price!
Instant on fuser sends paper printing within 8 seconds. Overall, I'm very pleased! I was tempted to get the next model up (2420) but the price difference with no standard duplexer killed that deal.
Wish list? An tiny LCD display telling me whats going on would be nice - but it has lights which do the job just fine. Also - and I'm just dreaming here, it would be nice to see an option for this printer to staple printouts...I know, I've been around pricey copy machines too much!
So, pick yourself up this printer! You won't be sorry. The print quality is very crisp - your well-known HP laser quality, and even graphics are suitable! Its B&W (no color printing), but the money saved on just one toner from time to time as apposed to inkjet cartridges every other month is mind boggling! ...and how often do you need color printing? Some may, but for the bulk of what I print, B&W is fine.

HP LaserJet 1020 Printer (Q5911A#ABA) Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased my HP 1020 laser printer at Office Depot for $129.99. This was a good bargain even compared to online shopping prices. I know that if you are patient, and you perform a bit of due diligence, you can get this printer "new, never opened, and unrefurbished" on eBay for around $100-120 (I know this because I bought a secnod one as a Christmas present for $105 on eBay). Note however, it does not come with a 2.0 cable - so you will have to buy one to connect it to your computer ($25 in the retail stores and $5-7 on eBay). I am one of those shoppers that "does his homework" before making purchases. I was buying this to replace my miserable Brother HL-1440. I say miserable despite its generally good ratings because the poor LONG-TERM value of this printer clearly outweighed the initial features. What I mean by this is that the Brother requires not only the replacement of a toner cartridge at, what $60 per shot? But also, an EXPENSIVE DRUM every 4-5 toner cartridges. The drum alone cost about $130!! You might as well buy a new laser printer - which I DID. Printer manufactureres are like drug dealers in a way- they sell the printer itself for cheap to lure you in...the hit you hard when it comes to the cartridges (and/or drum).
The beauty of the HP-1020 is that it is very inexpensive, efficient, blazing fast (as advertised - 353% faster) from the time you click "print" to when the printer actually spits our your document (about 4-5 seconds) even when the printer is not "warm." Also, THIS PRINTER DOES NOT REQUIRE A DRUM REPLACEMENT. The cartridges cost $70 if you pay full price, but I found new, original HP nonrefurbished cartridges for $55 (including the shipping cost) - never buy them in a store, always buy online from a reputable retailer like "New Egg".
Anyway, this prints very clean documents, and set-up could not be easier, even for a non-techie. I actually set this printer up on my home network so my wife could print from her (wireless internet connection) laptop, directly to the HP-1020 which I connected to my desktop computer. It is pretty cool.
FREE ADVICE: Don't listen to the untrained computer store high schoolers help who tell you (or me) that you need a network enabled printer to set up a network printer whereby you can share the printer with other computers or laptops on your network - you DON'T. Just search online for directions on how to set it up (and make sure your firewalls are DISABLED on all computers to add the new printer - you will know what I'm talking about once you try to set it up).
As for the specs of the HP-1020, don't let the 600x600 dpi mislead you. It prints equally as well if not better than as those "1200 x 1200" dpi printers - you will NOT be able to see a difference. If you can think you can, set up an appoinment with your optomotrist. In other words, why waste away your hard-earned $$$, which can be as much as an extra $50-100, just for useless specs that do not represent the true and actual print quality of documents you will receive? Put that $$$ towards a back-up toner cartridge. Besides, Hewlett-Packard utilizes some sort of "dpi enhancement" on the HL-1020 to maximize its 600x600 dpi to give you a 1200x1200 type print quality.
There was a newer model, i.e., HP-1022 with "better" dpi specs and more memory (8mb versus 2mb on the HP-1020). Again, don't let this mislead you into paying more than you have to. The memory supplied in the HP-1020 is PLENTY. Trust me, I am one of those guys that always wants the "best AND MOST features" on electronics - so if I thought it was necessary, I would have purchased the HP-1022.
The funny thing is, every time I would print on my old Brother HL-1440, my computer would ALWAYS give me an irritiating "not enough memory"-type pop-up everytime I printed, despite the fact I had over 24 MB of memory in the printer itself! NOT ANYMORE! This HL-1020 printer works flawlessly with 2 mb of memory. Also, if you are thinking about buying the HP-1022, the ratings I've seen online as not nearly as good as the HP-1020. In fact, the HP-1020 has received nearly perfect 5-star ratings from about 12-15 reviewers I've seen on the internet from different review websites. Plus, the HL-1022 costs about $70 more! For what?
In sum, I would HIGHLY recommend the HL-1020 printer for home or even small business use. It's truly a value, and you will not go broke once you get through the first toner cartridge. Thus, TWO thumbs up and FIVE stars. Oh by the way, I did look at other brands, HP seemed to be favored over others in reliability, quality, etc.

HP LaserJet P1006 Printer Review

(More customer reviews)I love this printer, I bought it on sale over the weekend for under $100 (couldn't resist a laser printer at that price!). I probably printed about 700 pages this weekend, one of the perks of being a Grad student I suppose.
The Positives
-Prints quickly and great font quality
-The printer is SMALL, smaller than my injet.
-Works great with XP and Vista (sorry, No Mac to test on)
The Con
-This printer won't work with my wireless print server. The reason given is that the driver doesn't support it at this time. My workaround for the time being is to share the printer from the desktop in my office since I do most of my printing from my laptop in another room.
Hopefully that driver or a firmware upgrade to the print server (whichever comes first) comes out soon! Otherwise this is an incredible laser printer for the price!
On a side note, many people in discussion forums have complained about the high cost per sheet for a laser printer (about 4 cents a page), it is still far lower than any inkjet AND the printer just came out, as far as I've seen, Laser cartridges (at least here on Amazon) tend to fall in price by a few dollars after the product has been out for 6 or more months. I don't see this changing for this printer as well.

(More customer reviews)This is a great printer and delivers on HP's promises. It is very versatile for small office printing. In our office though, we have a particular need to print from Autocad. This printer will not print properly as a system printer from Autocad (at least not in Windows 2000). There is a problem with the HP driver. This was solved by configuring the printer to print from Autocad using an older driver for a Laserjet 5. I do get an annoying device conflict warning every time I print though. This was accomplished, I might add, with no help from HP whatsoever. Not that I didn't try. Their primary solution seems to be to throw a bunch of HP users together and let them help each other. No one had a solution for my particular problem. HP makes great products, it is a shame that their support is so substandard. Product quality 5, minus 1 for lack of support.

(More customer reviews)Replaced my USB HP 1300 with this printer. It is on a mixed mac and Windows XP network. Extremely easy to setup. Plug into ethernet port and Bonjour instantly recognized and set up on mac via Printer system preferences, Install disc adds nice features on the mac such as IP address, toner level etc., very convenient. Also very easy to add to windows XP machines . Samsung did a great job of adding features that are Mac OS X compatible. Very solid construction, with convenient 50 tray auxiliary paper path, also designed for more heavy usage compared to ML2851. Only complaint is it seems to take a second or two longer to print the first sheet, and toner is not readily available at local office megastore.
Update: After 1 week in office first page out deemed too slow, returned and purchased HP P2055ND, It seems much quicker to print the first page, which is important in my setting, where we print single sheet walk out statements/receipts. The HP is more costly, but has gigbit networking. The samsung has better on screen support and info than the HP when installed on a mac. I would reduce the Samsung to 3.5 stars

The samsung filled the bill at a very attractive price (can be has for $160 with instant rebate). It was a breeze to setup on Mac OS 10.5 as a network printer. Bonjour found it and just use the Samsung driver. Also since it has native postscript support you can use the Generic Postscript Driver with it as well. Works fine under 10.5 that way as well. Printing speed is awesome, and printing on both sides is great. the smaller form factor is great too.

(More customer reviews)I picked up my HP Laserjet 2100 at a flea market for $5.00 around 2001 or so and it has served me well ever since, including the toner cartridge. I was able to find a post script level 2 personality chip for the printer used for $8 including shipping, so it can serve my mac printing as well. Since the printer includes an ethernet print server by default it makes an excellent home, small office or department printer. The printer is rated at 10 ppm and delivers well, especially for text only documents. It handles graphics, spreadsheets, charts and I have never run into a problem with fonts. Printing in PS is slightly slower than pcl 6 which is the native print engine. Using the built in networking I am able to print from any computer in my house and am able to keep the printer in the basement and out of the way. It has a web interface and a telnet interface for managing the printer and checking the status of the printer remotely. It's 1200x1200 print resolution provides very high quality text and graphics, particularly text which no inkjet printer can compete with. Another nice thing about this printer compared to inkjet printers, is that the toner never dries out the way ink cartridges do, since it uses toner which is ground up plastic. The only drawback to this printer is the lack of automatic duplexing (printing on both sides of the paper), although it is capable of printing up to 8 pages on a single sheet to save paper and toner. It also lacks color, which I find is no big deal. I have my photos printed at Walmart far cheaper than I could do it at home with an ink jet printer. The paper handling capacity is great with all the usual sizes included and envelopes. Unless you do a lot of color printing and don't mind paying out the nose for ink, I would recommend this printer over any inkjet and most low end brand new laser printers. You just can't go wrong with this baby.

Samsung ML-2525W Wireless Mono Laser Printer Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this printer a few weeks back. So, my review can only attest to the initial quality and operation of the printer. When shopping for a printer, I wanted a small, wireless (i.e. WiFi enabled), laser printer that I could use on my home wireless network. This printer fits the bill.
Once I received the printer, setup was incredibly easy. You just hook the USB cable to your computer, follow the software prompts, and then the printer is suddenly connected to the WiFi network. That is the last time I used the cable. Now, when I hit print on my laptop, it prints wirelessly.
I also like that the printer is relatively quick (24 ppm) and prints clean, crisp laser prints quickly. For $99, this is great deal and I'm pleased with the purchase.
I'd recommend buying this laser printer over the all-in-one units. While those all encompassing units may be tempting, I think you end up with a better deal by buying this Samsung printer and then buying a high-quality scanner as a separate item. For instance, I bought a separate Fujitsu Scansnap scanner (also, a very compact item). It scans so much better than the scanner I have on the all-in-one that I bought a couple years ago.

Brother HL-1850 Laser Printer Review

(More customer reviews)I have been a HP fan for many years but started looking at other manufacturers due to slow tech. support and high cost of consumables. HL-1850 has fit the bill. Half the cost per sheet compared to my HP. Output is clean and crisp. Built in duplexing. Quick and Quiet! And so far, no jams or problems of any kind. My views my change after wear and tear take their toll, but for now this is the printer of my dreams.

Brother HL-5050 17 PPM 600 dpi Laser Printer Review

Basic Operation - fast and reasonably quiet, appears to be well built.
Printing text - excellent, as good as a much more expensive industrial hp laser printer I frequently use. Nice and dark.
Printing graphics/photos - in highest settings (1200dpi, "improved gray scaling" checked) it's good, but nothing exceptional. The output is not too dark, as is sometimes the problem with other inexpensive lasers.
Manual Duplex printing - this was at first confusing to me because I wanted to use the lower paper tray to do it all: print one side and then feed the output back again into the lower tray to print the other side (if you have more than 50 sheets you need to use the lower tray). This did not work for me until I finally hardwired the tray settings from "auto detect" to "tray 1". The manual did not mention this step. New drivers from Brother (as of January 14, 2004) did not fix this. Printing duplex from the multi-purpose tray works fine without having to hardwire the settings.
Customer support - so far not good. I went through much trepidation figuring out how to get the lower tray to work on duplex because I could not reach support people. The number always seems to be busy.
Highs - good, fast prints and reasonably quiet operation.
Lows - documentation is not completely accurate, customer support isn't good. Could use a sleep mode indicator as the previous reviewer mentioned.

(More customer reviews)This is currently the only laserjet multifunction machine on the market, and it's a surprisingly good, economical product. Copying is excellent, and text print is BETTER--and faster--than on an HP 2100 laserjet. The flatbed scanner/copier accommodates an 8 1/2 x 14 page (unlike most of the "personal" models, which have only an 81/2 x 11 bed, which is true of every other multifunction machine). Set-up is easy and intuitive, and the tech staff has been surprisingly responsive. I have been exceedingly happy with both quality and ease of product. It makes a lot of sense for those who do a lot of black-and-white printing (much cheaper to run than an ink-jet for that function), but who want copying and color scanning capabilities as well.

(More customer reviews)I bought this printer because I needed to print out lengthy manuscripts, as well as graphics-heavy PDF files. This printer does both very well. It prints very fast if you have one or two pages. When I printed a twenty-page document, it paused every few pages. The entire document printed, crisp and clear. I was particularly impressed with the graphics output, which came out much clearer and sharper than my old HP laser printer.
I would recommend this printer to anyone who needs an affordable laser printer. Be aware that you will need to get a USB cable.

Brother HL-1650 Laser Printer Review

(More customer reviews)I have owned this for about a month. The HL-1650 is just about the best $600 I've ever spent. The speed is a little slowish on graphics heavy documents, but still much faster than inkjets with the laser quality output. The unit has a good number of features, but probably the strongest selling point for this unit is duplex printing at the $600 dollar price point. That's about half the cost for an HP with a similar feature without a noticeable drop-off in print quality. Outlets such as Office Depot display both Brother and HP brand laser printers, so they can be compared side by side. I was resistant to buying a laser printer that was not an HP, but I can honestly say I'm glad I took a chance on the Brother HL-1650. For the money it is by far the best printer out there for b&w printing, and the duplex feature makes it an even better buy.
