Unlike the 4M, the 2420 is silent! In fact, I often forget to turn it off when leaving the office.
The descriptions for the 2420 are confusing. The 500-sheet paper tray is NOT included. We bought one separately.

(More customer reviews)I bought this fax machine because I was tired of leaving my computer running 24 - 7 to receive faxes. This Fax machine might have some nice features but it is lacking in some basics (both in advertizing specifications, hardware and quality).... I was shocked to find out that it is rated at only 9600 baud rate - I figured all fax machines sold nowadays are rated at 14,400 - boy was I wrong (I guess if they don't say 14.4k then you have to assume it's a 9.6k). Nowhere (except in the specifications INSIDE the manual) did it say anything about baud rate. I ragged on my clients for not having 14,400 fax machines and got most of them to upgrade and I end looking pretty stupid on this one.
I could not believe that you have to purchase an additional paper tray for receiving incoming faxes. If you have your fax machine anywhere close to the edge of a desk - your incoming faxes will end up on the floor without this "paper stacker" (which Amazon.com does not sell). How lame and cheap can you get?
Also I was very displeased to find out it only came with a so-called "free starter film cartridge" that will allow you to print up to 65 pages (whoopdeedo) and then you have to buy the "real" Film Cartridge (prints up to 330 pgs) - anywhere from $26.99 to $35.00 - depending on who you buy it from. This is like buying a printer with no printer cartridge in it - every Laserjet or bubble jet printer I have ever bought has come with a complete printer cartridge.
And then to top it off - the few faxes I have received so far from three (3) different souces has some hairline marks running vertically up and down on the printed pages.
The additional items you have to purchase makes that $129.99 fax machine total to $164.34 (shipping not included) for a complete ready to go package.
I think I'll return mine and go back to using my computer fax!!!

(More customer reviews)Having owned an HP 3330 multifunction (from 2002) I thought this new 2006 model can only be better. Well, it is in some ways....I guess.
The 3390 adds duplex printing and has a built-in JetDirect for network based printing and sharing, but other than that it doesn't seem to be any different than the recently discontinued 3380. And for that matter its not a whole lot different than the 4 year old 3330. Fairly sad product innovation on HP's part considering that the competition is offering some credible new features in this class of product.
Comparing the new Brother 8860DN and the HP 3390 side by side proves the Brother is superior in most things. Since this is an HP 3390 review, I'll refer you to my Brother 8860 review for more details.
Its not all doom and gloom with the 3390, I just feel for the $700 price they are asking, HP could have added a bit more innovation.
Things missing from the HP that I wish were included:
1) duplex scanning from document feeder
2) faster scanning (its S-L-O-W)
3) a legal size scan glass (realtors still use legal paper)
4) fax forward to email
Other annoyances:
The 3390 has only been out for a few weeks, however they've already revisioned the software from V1.0 to V1.1 and now V2.0. HP has also released two firmware updates in that tims as well. Sounds good, assuming all problems are resolved, however they are not! In the couple days I used this printer, I found the following issues:
1) the TWAIN interface for the scanner will often give warning messages about the document feeder and these warnings don't make sense. Bypassing them resolves the problem. Plus the TWAIN interface counts the pages backwards (ex: 6 of 2 instead of 2 of 6).
2) I have experienced issues where printing a document from Word will cause all text to be truncated on the paper.
3) TWAIN interface will not work with the Windows XP built-in fax program.
4) If you turn off your 3390 the HP toolbox program will sometimes hang.
So, all in all its a decent machine. For anyone looking for a no nonsense multifunction this will do the job. For $200 less you can also get the Brother 8860 that will do everything the same plus more.

(More customer reviews)Note added October 15, 2008: Amazon still won't let me change my rating, which now would be 1 star (the lowest) based on horrendous quality control. I bought two of these and both had hardware failures within a year or two, of course outside of warranty. The one I bought for my daughter had its network card fail. She can still use it via USB, but not over the network. The one I bought for myself recently failed to scan, fax or copy when using the document feeder, which uses a separate sensing window from flatbed copying and scanning. As a flatbed copier or scanner, it still works. But when using the document feeder, the copies or scans come out blank. And, yes, I've put the paper in the right side up. I suspect that there's a separate sensor or light for that window and it's broken. On top of the horrible QC this seems to imply, my email to HP took them eight days to answer and then all they said was "this case is a hardware issue so our recommendation for you is to call 800-HP-INVENT (800-474-6836) so you can talk with a Hardware technical agent that can guide you through some trouble shooting steps to determine the cause of this problem and also give you the best solution." OK, I call and after over a significant wait time, I learn that they can help trouble shoot by phone for a fee, offer me a trade-in on a new model, or repair this one. No way am I going to waste more money on this disaster. While maybe I've just had a bad run of luck, this does not appear to be the HP I used to know, where quality was top notch.
Note added March 19 2007: Amazon won't let me change my rating from 4 to 3 stars, but I would do so if I could due to networking problems that resurfaced. I suspect that this is an issue with networked printers in general, not HP, but the time it took to solve the problem makes me wonder whether I would have bought this printer if I knew then what I know now. When the network access works, it's great, but if your network undergoes a change (I had to replace a Linksys router that went bad), be prepared to do some work. It took me several hours to get things working again. Before I had this problem, I bought one of these as a gift for my adult daughter, living in another state. She had to get the "geek squad" in to solve her similar problems, at a cost of roughly $200. The problem seems to be changes in the IP addresses in the network, and the manual didn't make it easy to figure out how to even find out the IP address that the printer currently is using. (Hint: Print a Configuration Report from the printer's front panel, using the menu. The manual does tell you how to do that, and the IP address is part of that report.) Once you have the IP address, I think getting the printer back up would be a lot easier -- but I'm not about to bring it down and find out! Hoping this helps.
I have several Macs and one Windows machine and had been using two separate printers for the two "tribes." I also had a fax machine, an old flat bed scanner, and a copier -- all taking lots of real estate. When the Samsung ML1430 that I was using on an Airport Extreme USB printer sharing system broke after three years, I decided to go with a networked printer that could be shared between the Macs and the PC. I wanted a major printer brand, and HP was at the top of that list. Why? Because Samsung had stopped supporting the Mac and, as I upgraded my OS, I had had difficulties keeping the printer working. The old driver didn't work with some OS upgrades. I hoped that a networked printer would make sharing among the Macs and the PC easy -- and to a large extent it has.
I did have minor problems getting the printer to work with the PC since I had to turn off all firewalls during the installation and Dell had two. After about an hour of on-line research and fiddling, I got it to work. Getting the Macs to recognize the printer was a snap -- sorry Redmond, Apple's ads seem on target here, though part of the problem may have been with Dell putting two firewalls on the PC.
After the initial hassle with the PC, which has nothing to do with the 3055 per se, I am very happy with all functions -- with one minor caveat below. As a printer or copier, it's fast (almost 20 pages a minute and less than 10 seconds to first page). The automatic document feeder has worked flawlessly so far -- often the Achilles heel in my experience. Some other reviews (elsewhere, not here at Amazon) noted that half-tone copies weren't the greatest and I'd agree. The pictures come out a bit dark.Some of those reviews noted that changing the default setting from text to picture (or whatever HP calls it) helps, but I haven't tried that yet which is a sign that it's not a huge problem.
I haven't used the scanner much yet, but did a few test scans which looked good. On color photos, the 300 dpi scan was poor, but setting it to 600 dpi did a nice job. The level of JPEG encoding changed from 300 to 600 dpi, with the 600 dpi scan being a much larger file, so it's not clear how much of the poor quality at 300 was due to the scanner and how much to the JPEG encoding. I also have a Fujitsu ScanSnap and will keep it since it is much faster than the HP -- but it cost as much as the HP and just does scanning, so that's not an indictment of the HP. The ScanSnap is intended only for sheet scans, not books or other flatbed material, but is excellent at what it does.
The fax features work well too, and I got rid of my fax machine, freeing up space. I haven't yet gotten rid of the copier, but might. The 3055 will enlarge and reduce by up to a factor of four -- a nice feature. Having only one toner cartridge to keep track of, instead of the three I had before (printer, copier and fax), would be nice. HP toner is about 3 cents per page, a bit more than some laser printers, but much less than ink jets and OK in my book.
The 3055 is also good on energy usage. I hooked up a power and energy meter and, after about 180 continuous hours of light use (only two of use it and we're not heavy printers), it averaged only 8 watts. When the laser engine is working, of course the power peaks up to about 500 watts, but HP has been good about making sure it doesn't use too much power when idle, while still allowing it to start up fairly quickly. I've seen the idle power drop down as low as 6 watts at times.
I'm not sure if I should have given four or five stars to this unit, with the one star loss being mostly due to my networking problems mentioned above. As I said, that's not an HP problem. So if you're looking for a networked all-in-one, consider this five stars within that category.
Note added February 22, 2008: My network did come down again, and this time I set up a static IP address for the machine. With what I'd learned in the interim, it wasn't such a big deal to do and has been working well for months. Now, I'm not worried about the network coming down and causing major problems. But you need to learn what static IP addresses work with your router (it varies!), how to set it (from the Menu on the console on the HP 3055 and choose Network Configuration, TCP/IP, Manual), and then how to tell your computer to find the device (hint: Intel Macs need the newer HP Setup Assistant and will not work with the one I had; accessible from HP's support site). On the negative side, the one I bought for my daughter seems to have a bad network card now. That cost her another $200 geek squad visit to figure out, plus now we have to figure out if it's worth fixing. My rating would now be 3-4 stars (depending if her bad card is unusual or not) if you understand networking really well or can rope a friend with that knowledge into helping you, but no stars otherwise.

HP Color LaserJet 2605dn Printer (Q7822A#ABA) Review

(More customer reviews)I have only ever owned color ink jet printers such as Epson and Brother, but I must say, for Laser printing, HP takes the cake. I do own the HP LaserJet 4 Plus (Monochrome B/W) and it has worked great for me for 6 years plus. This new machine is definitely a major improvement.
First off, it is very easy to set up and you can choose whether to have it run off of a USB port, or you can network it through your system. I personally have it connected to my Wireless D-Link router and I have 2 Windows PCs, 1 Toshiba wireless Laptop, and 2 Wireless Macs networked and ALL of them are able to pick up the HP with the provided HP software disk and all are able to print from it.
It also prints so fast and is remarkably quiet. It is a monster of a machine in size (be prepared to have a nice big space for it, both in heighth, width and length - it is (WxLxH) 18.00" x 16.00" x 15.00" but remember, you need room to feed the front of it, and you need room for the wires in back). It takes 4 different cartridges (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black - CMYK) so this can be costly. The cartridges run about $80 each, so it costs $320 to replace all of them, HOWEVER, they last for a whopping 2500 pages each color. It would take 5 ink cartridges of each color to last that long. And when the toner is low, you get a warning. You can even view the printer on a network from any connected computer and see EXACTLY how many pages are left for each cartridge (based on averages).
The Bad: I'll try not and leave a bad comment about this as the final thing to say, however, it is quite lousy as a paper feeder. I may be doing something wrong, but I've found that you can only print one piece of paper at a time. Sometimes I print out a lot of stuff on one-side of the paper, then, when I'm done looking at it, I turn the paper over, place those in the manual feeder, then use the paper again to do more printing on the other blank side. You can't really do that with this. And as far as printing Business Cards, or Cardstock, it is not the best. You can't simply lay the paper on the tray and then have the printer print from it. You have to insert the paper in a special way, wait for the printer to "suck" the paper in, then once it has it, it is able to print. It did print generic Avery labels okay though.
All in all, it is great. Oh, and there's one astounding point that I forgot to make: it prints on both sides WITHOUT having to change paper around or anything, called duplexing (sorry, I didn't know these terms before). For example, I had a 14-page document to print out, so I just went to the 'Finishing' tab and selected 'Print on Both Sides' and wahlah, it printed 7 pieces of paper, two-sided absolutely flawlessly, without having to touch or insert anything. I eventually printed 200 double-sided brochures on shiny color magazine type paper, and the printing was perfect.
If you don't need to have this printer on a network, and you don't need duplex (double-sided) printing, get the much cheaper HP 1600 Color Laser. Otherwise, for a color laser printer under $500 to be able to be networked and duplex among other things, it is really a great deal all around, thus, it gets 4 stars. I did have to deduct one star for the bad paper feeder, but aside from that, it's superb. Get yours now - the cartridges are already in it and full-sized (not sample cartridges), so it is ready to go. You may need a Network cable, but it does come with a USB 2.0 cable just in case you don't have one. Enjoy and thank you for reading.

After refilling, the cartridge no longer worked properly. I would not recommend this product. I had to throw out the cartridge AND the refill kit. I also questioned the company about leaving the holes open after refilling and was told that they would not leak ink. They leaked ink!

HP LaserJet 1020 Printer (Q5911A#ABA) Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased my HP 1020 laser printer at Office Depot for $129.99. This was a good bargain even compared to online shopping prices. I know that if you are patient, and you perform a bit of due diligence, you can get this printer "new, never opened, and unrefurbished" on eBay for around $100-120 (I know this because I bought a secnod one as a Christmas present for $105 on eBay). Note however, it does not come with a 2.0 cable - so you will have to buy one to connect it to your computer ($25 in the retail stores and $5-7 on eBay). I am one of those shoppers that "does his homework" before making purchases. I was buying this to replace my miserable Brother HL-1440. I say miserable despite its generally good ratings because the poor LONG-TERM value of this printer clearly outweighed the initial features. What I mean by this is that the Brother requires not only the replacement of a toner cartridge at, what $60 per shot? But also, an EXPENSIVE DRUM every 4-5 toner cartridges. The drum alone cost about $130!! You might as well buy a new laser printer - which I DID. Printer manufactureres are like drug dealers in a way- they sell the printer itself for cheap to lure you in...the hit you hard when it comes to the cartridges (and/or drum).
The beauty of the HP-1020 is that it is very inexpensive, efficient, blazing fast (as advertised - 353% faster) from the time you click "print" to when the printer actually spits our your document (about 4-5 seconds) even when the printer is not "warm." Also, THIS PRINTER DOES NOT REQUIRE A DRUM REPLACEMENT. The cartridges cost $70 if you pay full price, but I found new, original HP nonrefurbished cartridges for $55 (including the shipping cost) - never buy them in a store, always buy online from a reputable retailer like "New Egg".
Anyway, this prints very clean documents, and set-up could not be easier, even for a non-techie. I actually set this printer up on my home network so my wife could print from her (wireless internet connection) laptop, directly to the HP-1020 which I connected to my desktop computer. It is pretty cool.
FREE ADVICE: Don't listen to the untrained computer store high schoolers help who tell you (or me) that you need a network enabled printer to set up a network printer whereby you can share the printer with other computers or laptops on your network - you DON'T. Just search online for directions on how to set it up (and make sure your firewalls are DISABLED on all computers to add the new printer - you will know what I'm talking about once you try to set it up).
As for the specs of the HP-1020, don't let the 600x600 dpi mislead you. It prints equally as well if not better than as those "1200 x 1200" dpi printers - you will NOT be able to see a difference. If you can think you can, set up an appoinment with your optomotrist. In other words, why waste away your hard-earned $$$, which can be as much as an extra $50-100, just for useless specs that do not represent the true and actual print quality of documents you will receive? Put that $$$ towards a back-up toner cartridge. Besides, Hewlett-Packard utilizes some sort of "dpi enhancement" on the HL-1020 to maximize its 600x600 dpi to give you a 1200x1200 type print quality.
There was a newer model, i.e., HP-1022 with "better" dpi specs and more memory (8mb versus 2mb on the HP-1020). Again, don't let this mislead you into paying more than you have to. The memory supplied in the HP-1020 is PLENTY. Trust me, I am one of those guys that always wants the "best AND MOST features" on electronics - so if I thought it was necessary, I would have purchased the HP-1022.
The funny thing is, every time I would print on my old Brother HL-1440, my computer would ALWAYS give me an irritiating "not enough memory"-type pop-up everytime I printed, despite the fact I had over 24 MB of memory in the printer itself! NOT ANYMORE! This HL-1020 printer works flawlessly with 2 mb of memory. Also, if you are thinking about buying the HP-1022, the ratings I've seen online as not nearly as good as the HP-1020. In fact, the HP-1020 has received nearly perfect 5-star ratings from about 12-15 reviewers I've seen on the internet from different review websites. Plus, the HL-1022 costs about $70 more! For what?
In sum, I would HIGHLY recommend the HL-1020 printer for home or even small business use. It's truly a value, and you will not go broke once you get through the first toner cartridge. Thus, TWO thumbs up and FIVE stars. Oh by the way, I did look at other brands, HP seemed to be favored over others in reliability, quality, etc.

HP CM1312NFI Color LaserJet Printer Review

(More customer reviews)This is NOT in the same class as the much more expensive 3500 series color MFPs, and it is not supposed to be. At a cost of 1/5th the bigger printers, you need to lower your expectations, but you still get a lot of printer for the money. I've had many inkjet printers and installed many color and BW laser printers. The first laser printer I used was an Apple LaserWriter in about 1987, so my experience with these devices is quite extensive. I have this installed in a home office networked via a simple wireless router and print/scan with XP, Vista, and Win7-64.
Positives:
+ Much faster and sharper printing than even high-quality inkjets when printing typical office documents
+ Prints evenly and consistently even large areas of highly saturated color on plain paper, unlike the banded printing from inkjets on plain paper
+ Easy to install on XP, Vista, and Win7 64 as both a USB and network printer
+ Quiet
+ Sheetfeeder is convenient and reliable
+ Prints at the same speed and quality regardless of how long it sits idle or off, unlike an inkjet printer that often needs cartridges replaced or cleaned after sitting idle for a couple of weeks.
+ Doesn't spew gobs of ink on paper at random intervals, which many inkjets do, especially after they've been sitting idle for some time
+ EXCELLENT print output - very sharp even at small print sizes and fine lines
Negatives:
- I have the same problems as others when scanning using the sheetfeeder: Scans always come out as 8.5 x 14.
- Low paper capacity. Why doesn't EVERY printer come with a 500 sheet bin? Do manufacturers really save any money by making the smaller bin?
- Manual feed is not easy to use. Basically, you need to pull out the drawer and put what you want printed in the regular drawer.
- Scanning from front panel isn't working for me, which should be easy to do. Perhaps this is the problem others indicate when they say it is hard to set up. Scanning is fine when you start it from the computer.
- Won't email without talking to a computer. I really like that feature in the more expensive models, and it shouldn't be that difficult to implement.
- Wont' print truly photo-quality as well as a photo inkjet, but the prints on photo paper are still VERY good.
- Do I REALLY need a THREE HUNDRED megabyte package of drivers and software just to print? How about a light-weight software option HP? Better yet, how about building the drivers into the printer's built-in web server so that I don't have to get those monster packages from the Internet? Why can't I manage ALL settings from the built-in web pages?
-+ I wasn't satisfied with the default scan settings, but after tweaking to boost the image quality, I am happy with the scan quality and speed.
Regarding the price of prints: Although a set of cartridges sets you back about 260 bucks, that will not get you anywhere near the $1.00+ price per page others talk about. My conservative estimate at cost is about $0.15/page in color including paper, less in B/W. If you force B/W printing for most output, you will be closer to $0.04/page. Having spent a ton of money on ink cartridges for inkjets, only to waste much of the ink on cleaning and reprints when gobs of ink land on my output, I think the overall cost of ownership will be close to even or better when compared to a typical inkjet. Counting the cost of time and frustration in the cost of using an inkjet will further weigh the cost per print in favor of the CM1312nfi.
Some other "negative" points are speed, lack of duplex scanning/printing, and some other bells and whistles mentioned in other reviews. I don't count these negative points against this printer since these are features that you really can't expect in this price class. I looked long and hard at the HP CM2320, but the much higher cost of entry didn't seem to pay off for me. Including a set of cartridges, the 1312 costs 30-50% less than the 2320.
I compared this printer to Brother and Samsung MFPs at a local office supply store. The output quality, speed, and overall build quality are significantly higher than similarly priced competitors. The output quality of a color brochure copied on each of the brands is what sold me on the HP - the CM1312 output is MUCH better than the other brands. I also expect to be able to service and purchase supplies for an HP long after Samsung and Brother are forgotten about.
I'd give this printer a solid 4 stars if I could get the scanning from the front panel and the auto page size recognition to work. I won't count things against this printer that it really isn't designed to handle, like true photo quality and high speed. Anticipating being able to work out the bugs with scanning and page size, I'll give this a 3.5 and round up to 4 stars.

HP LaserJet P1006 Printer Review

(More customer reviews)I love this printer, I bought it on sale over the weekend for under $100 (couldn't resist a laser printer at that price!). I probably printed about 700 pages this weekend, one of the perks of being a Grad student I suppose.
The Positives
-Prints quickly and great font quality
-The printer is SMALL, smaller than my injet.
-Works great with XP and Vista (sorry, No Mac to test on)
The Con
-This printer won't work with my wireless print server. The reason given is that the driver doesn't support it at this time. My workaround for the time being is to share the printer from the desktop in my office since I do most of my printing from my laptop in another room.
Hopefully that driver or a firmware upgrade to the print server (whichever comes first) comes out soon! Otherwise this is an incredible laser printer for the price!
On a side note, many people in discussion forums have complained about the high cost per sheet for a laser printer (about 4 cents a page), it is still far lower than any inkjet AND the printer just came out, as far as I've seen, Laser cartridges (at least here on Amazon) tend to fall in price by a few dollars after the product has been out for 6 or more months. I don't see this changing for this printer as well.

HP Laserjet M1522NF Printer Review

The HP1522nf had everything I was looking for--Fax, Scan, laser printing, feeder, PPM requirements--and what I thought was HP quality. Although we purchased it from Amazon.com on 4/17, the printer was not placed into use until 5/1 because we were still in construction mode on our business. On May 1, I spent several hours on the phone with HP tech support...in India...and I couldn't understand most of what they said. Worse, they couldn't understand *me.* And I speak very clearly.
I was told that the printer could not be plugged into a surge protector--has to be plugged straight into the wall, and they eventually decided that I needed to download the printer software from HP's website to cure the fact that the printer simply would not operate after printing one page.
I uninstalled the software that I'd installed from HP's disc. The problem here is that the uninstall doesn't remove all of the software it's installed. It leaves tons of junk on the computer. I reinstalled with the fresh download and the printer worked for about a week. The scan and FAX functions refused to work, but I had a business to open and didn't have time to sit on the phone with HP tech support for hour after hour.
On May 20th, I called HP tech support and the first question I asked was why they had never checked back with me as they said they'd do. The response was that they'd closed the file as "successfully handled" because (they claimed) when tech support tried to call me back, they found my number disconnected. My number was NOT disconnected, but the number they were calling had absolutely not one digit in common with my number.
I spent two days on the phone with tech support, uninstalling and reinstalling the software over and over, coaxing the printer to please do something right, trying to understand what the HP tech support people were saying... It was MEGA-frustrating.
The problems? The printer would print once, and then turn itself off. HP absurdly placed the switch in the back (lower left side), so in order to power cycle the printer, it's really handy if you know how to do yoga. However, power cycling it would do nothing after awhile. The printer turned itself off and stayed off.
HP tech support asked me to FAX them the receipt, which I did (before the printer finally decided to stay dead), and HP's tech support had the gall to complain that it was too blurry to read. Having been sent with one of their printers and received on their equipment, the quality of the FAX would be HP's problem--not mine.
The machine would not scan. Trying to run the scan software resulted in a pop-up window telling me that the scan had failed, did I want to try again. It never scanned.
The computer I installed the software on unfortunately runs Vista. I asked if this could be the problem. HP tech support thought not. However, when trying to input data into the FAX feature on the computer, I ran into a series of annoying problems. For example, inputting the business name required that I input one letter and then the HP software would spit up a yellow caution sign window with the letter and a question mark. I'd click "OK," and then enter another letter, at which point HP software would spit up the same yellow caution sign with the new letter and a question mark. I'd click "OK"...and this is how the entire business name had to be entered! One letter at a time and no spaces. Hitting the space bar would bounce the cursor back to the beginning. I kludged that problem by inserting an underscore between words. It's insane!
Finally HP tech support decided it was a bad printer and that they needed to replace my brand new straigh-out-of-the-box printer with a used refurbished one! That's when I blew up. And that's when HP lost me as a customer.
I complained vociferously. They said they'd review the issues, but replacing with a used refurbished unit was all HP policy allows.
I wrote scathing emails to HP tech support and to HP's CEO (whose email address is on the HP website if you're patient enough to search for it). I decided to cc Amazon.com as well.
Next morning, I received a wonderful email from Amazon telling me that due to the extenuating circumstances, they'd already shipped me a new printer and sent a label for the return of the non-functional unit. Amazon ROCKS!
Then I received a call from HP tech support telling me in pidgin English that they'd reviewed the situation and would send me a used refurbished unit. It was great fun to tell them to go pound sand.
My new printer arrived as scheduled. I spent hours on my computer--weeding through folders, uninstalling every particle of HP software I could find--looking in hidden folders (they're in there too), as well as taking ownership of items and changing permissions in order to dump eons of the nasty buggers. I plugged the printer INTO THE WALL RECEPTICLE. I installed the software from a fresh download.
It works. It FAXes. (The first two FAXes failed, but after that it worked. I still had to enter the business name header one letter at a time, each letter followed by the annoying sign and clicking "OK.") It scans. It prints. It doesn't turn itself off. BUT--after reading these reviews, I have to wonder how long this "success" will hold.
I wish I'd bought any other brand printer. Brother printers seem to be garnering good reviews, but based on past experience with having to kick those suckers to print, I decided against Brother. Epson seems to be having success. Really, ANYTHING has to be better than an HP printer.
Until HP gets its act together with technically-correct software and printers that work, and more importantly--MOVES THEIR TECH SUPPORT BACK TO THE UNITED STATES--I refuse to do business with them. I've bought probably 10 HP printers over the past few years. Maybe more. I don't mind spending a little time on the phone with tech support for minor issues. But in the past two years--it's happened with every single printer with every single set-up, and it's gotten old. So long, HP. Your printers don't work. Your software doesn't work. And your tech support is atrocious.

(More customer reviews)This is a good machine, but as many have pointed out the software can be a problem. Here's some software install advice (below) to make it work well for you.
I have a Brother laser AIO at my office that I love, but I chose this HP for my home for several reasons. The WiFi Brother unit has a 10 page document feeder compared to HP's 25 page. This was important to me, maybe not you. I really like the styling of the HP better. The HP rep was in Best Buy and printed off a photo for me. It was fantastic. I've reproduced the same results at home, though I didn't buy it as a photo printer. The Brother has a phone handset hanging off the side that I will never use. The HP looks & feels like a higher quality product, though the Brother reviews are good.
Follow the quick start guide to set up on your LAN. I have WEP and had no problems...literally a couple minutes to setup.
1st, in general, never use photo manipulation software that these printer companies provide. If you need to work with photos invest in a good commercial product. There's some reasonabally priced products.
2nd. Trash the disk that comes with the printer and go straight to HP.com and download the latest drivers. That have fixes most of the problems the other reviews point out. You have two download options, drivers only or full software. I did drivers only and it worked fine, however you loose control of some of the units settings, so I went back and got the full package.
However, I highly recommend this installation method that I used.
Unzip the download and run. then...
1. Choose the custom (not the "easy" recommended) installation option.
2. Choose "NO" on the next pages which asks if you want to do auto updates. Anytime you select this for any product you now have another application running in the background all the time polling the internet. It will slow your computer down.
3. On the next screen select "custom". Don't be afraid, ever if you're not an "advance user" as it recommends.
4. You get a screen with a bunch of options to install. The first one you have to select, the drivers. Then uncheck "shop for HP" (just crap), "HP Updater" (memory & bandwidth eater), "customer particapition program" (memory & bandwidith eater), "smart web printing" (you can try it, but more resident sw to eat up cpu and memory), "HP photosmart essentials" (not essential and from what I read it's crappy software. You can try it, but it'll save you 40MB not to install), "OCR" (unless you really use OCR. If you use it a lot, buy a good program, this will save you another 80MB).
What you do select is obviously "drivers" (it makes you & you do need this), "Solution Center" (no actual solutions here, but it does give you some control over your settings), "imaging & device functions".
Choose the default directory it recommends, unless you really know what you're doing and want another directory.
Choose "connect through network", if you are connecting through the WiFi. Make sure you get the printer on the network first, as the directions tell you.
Don't sign up for the HP offers crap, unless you like spam.
I'm used to the Brother scanning SW, but now that I'm getting used to the particulars of HP's it's not too bad. I do have a problem scanning from the plate glass from Adobe Acrobat. It works fine with the doc feeder, but for some reason not the glass. I just go to the "solution center" and tell it to scan to a pdf and it works fine.
I did jump on the HP support site around midnight and have a live chat with a support person. He's the one who informed me I need to install more than basic drivers to gain some control over settings. I found the support helpful, but I didn't exactly have a brain teaser of a question either.
Good luck...and don't install that darn auto updater.

(More customer reviews)Okay. It isn't perfect. Installation isn't as easy as it should be. Instructions aren't as good as they should be. Some printers work with it, and apparently some don't.
But go look at the ratings on all the other print servers. You'll see the same problems. I tried at least three others, and couldn't get any of them to work. I've been able to successfully get this print server to work with an Epson R300 (USB 1.1), a Canon MP830 all-in-one(USB 2, print only), and even a Lexmark Optra T610 laser printer(parallel, with a USB-to-parallel adapter from Belkin).
Printer manufacturers have gone nuts with bi-directional information going back and forth between the printer and the computer. The result: really pretty printer drivers that give you loads of information and options, but depend on the printer being physically connected to the computer. But when you want to easily share that printer with a bunch of other people (especially a bunch of people with laptops), it's much more difficult. Either everybody has to swap cables, or you buy a print server--and give up the pretty driver screens that pop up to tell you to buy more ink.
The D-Link DPR-1260 is the only one I could find that actually listed compatible printers on the box. They say that they tested with 100 different printers. I believe it. Their competitors don't seem to have done nearly as much testing.
If you aren't comfortable setting up a wireless router on your own, or if you needed help installing your printer the first time, don't buy this. If you can figure out what the d-link is doing by setting ports on your printers to print to an IP address, give it a try.
If the market had some better entries, I probably wouldn't rate this with 5 stars. But it appears to me to be the cream of the crop.
Update (12/2007): We've had it for about a year, and we've had trouble a number of times. It repeatedly loses settings. If I could reduce the number of stars, I'd give it two or three.

(More customer reviews)I looked for a replacement for my Canon MultiPass F50 and needed a Mac-compatible printer that has Ethernet connectivity, an auto-document feeder, and could print 4x6 photos. It came down to this versus the Canon MP830. I chose the HP since the Canon lacked an Ethernet interface.
PRO's:
First, the unit is very attractive and matches the style of my Mac Mini. Second, it has both an Ethernet and WiFi built in, which is great for sharing it amongst all the computers in our house, both Mac and PC. Third, it has a built in slot to hold 4x6 photoprints, which it prints directly from a camera or PC or memory card. Fourth, it has ADF, which is great when you have 10+ pages to fax and hate to feed them in one by one. Fifth, print quality looks great, nearly the same as the Canon 830. Sixth, I got it super cheap at Costco for $239 (they were running a rebate). Seventh, the unit is smaller than most multi-function printers, Eighth, it has a little color LCD for viewing prints off a memory card.
Cons:
It cannot scan 35mm slides (which the Canon is able to). Also, unlikely that it scans an 8.5x14 document. The print cartridges do not look like they can be manually refilled with ink kits (not that this is always a good idea). The included Mac software was wrong (it was for a 7100 series), so make sure you visit the HP site and download the right software, then it installs easy. Once I had the right software, it took me no time to configure it on a network with 2 Mac Mini's. Lastly, print cartridges are not exactly a bargain: the color ones are $10 ea (you need 5) and the black ink ones are $18 ea. The cartridges look really small, so it will be interesting to see how much print output I get. Buy refills at costco, where they are $56 for a complete set, and $46 for 3 black cartridges.
I'll play with it more, but so far, I am impressed it with the speed and quality, and the cost versus features is simply unbeatable. Especially if you are a Mac user, finding a Ethernet and wifi enabled multi-function printer with ADF is pretty much impossible at this price.

(More customer reviews)We've put this all-in-one to the test for a couple weeks now - and we love it. We use it from three systems in the house, one running Vista, the other two running XP. HP's support for Vista has to be downloaded. It is really stupid that they haven't updated the CD in the box by now, not made the download idiot-proof (or even close). Downloading and using the Vista update is a little challenging - but it works.
Three KILLER featurs:
(1) two sided printing
It's about time we had an inkjet printer to do this!!!
(2) scanning to directories on our machine (to directories on Vista, which are password protected - nevertheless very easy to setup)
You load documents, push a button, select one of 10 preset places to scan to - and press START - the files show up as PDF (color) in the directory.
I've scanned stacks of onesided, stack of two sided, and a bunch of odd-and-ends receipts on the flatbed (one hint: tell it what size you are scanning on the flatbed, and it will double its speed because it won't scan to figure out the size and then scan for real).
(3) It is a network printer - so it is NOT dependent on any one computer being turned on - it is on our home network and simply receives and prints print jobs.
It is FAST (in draft mode). Very very fast, and good output (some unevenness - which is fine). In normal mode, it is slower and the output is excellent.
It is a tad noisy sometimes. It was very noisy during setup, and any time it is powered up and seems to sort itself out internally. This worried us at first, but it seemed to only be a setup issue - and not during regular printing. It is not a silent printer - but not excessively noisy either. If you want "laser printer level quiet" - this is not it - it is certainly not that quiet or smooth.
I do recommend HP fix their Vista downloads to be reasonable to us - it is embarrassing. It is also disappointing they haven't gotten around to updating their CD in the box.
The product is good. We've used the scanner, printer and FAX features well enough to be sure this is a winner.
