(More customer reviews)The other reviewer must be retarded. There's a flash in the friggin' display picture above! What do you think that white thing near the center is?? The flash is set to auto, by default, although you can toggle it on/off. If you get this camera, and the flash won't fire at all, return it to the store because you obviously got a defective model (or are just retarded).
I bought this for my four-year-old son. Maybe that's too young, but this camera is perfect for him. There are very few buttons: an On/off button (press once to turn on, press and hold to turn off), a shutter (press and hold), and then a dial on the back that has the flash toggle, a delete button, and left/right buttons to navigate shots with. What's neat is that there's no "play" or "review" mode; the camera stays in it's normal photo-mode and whenever you press the navigation buttons it automatically reviews older photos for you. After a second or two it goes back to photo-mode. This makes it pretty easy for kids, I would think. No menus or anything.
The photo-taking part of the camera is pretty easy, even for a toddler. You just push the shutter. If you have the flash in auto mode, it will fire if needed. Otherwise everything is automatic. A word of caution about the shutter lag: it's pretty significant, so make sure that your kids know they need to hold the camera for a second or two to make sure that they get the photo they want...my son got lots of pictures of his feet the first time he tried it out.
The LCD screen on this camera is utter crap: you can barely tell what the heck you just took a photo of. However, once you get the pics transferred to the computer, it DOES look better. Although 1.3 megapixels is pretty small by today's standards, it's good enough for a "toy" camera like this.
I would recommend this for anyone looking to try and get their small children into photography. It's not bad!
As for my rating, I only gave it three stars. It's really cheaply made and kinda crappy, so I wouldn't rate it any higher. But it does everything you'd expect a $[...] camera to do, so it's not bad.

I tossed the foam insert for iPod, etc. I didn't want it for that and I wouldn't own an Apple product if you put a gun to my head and told me I could have it for free.
It holds my stereo face plate, my GPS, my two MP3 players, a Tekkeon battery pack for recharging anything that needs it, my bluetooth connected cell phone head set, and the remote for my car stereo. Plus two sets of ear buds for the MP3 players (so two kids can watch movies in the back seat), the MicroSD cards that have the movies on them, spare batteries for my cell phone, spare batteries for the battery pack, all the wires and adapters to make everything work, etc.
Basically everything I don't want to leave in my vehicle or that someone would smash a window in my vehicle to get at goes in this case. I can either tuck it out of sight or take it with me when I leave my truck. It's very sturdy and is exactly what I was looking for, I was using a cardboard box before I got the case and everything rattled around in there. This is a very well constructed case and can be modified for anything that you want to put into it (anything that will fit of course).
If you need to carry and protect sensitive electronic gadgets I can highly recommend this very nice case.

Smartparts Spx7 Digital Frame 7 Wood W/syncpix Review

(More customer reviews)I have owned 2 Smart Parts digital picture frames for 4 years and 2.5 years. They run all day, every day. I used to turn them off at night, but it has been years since I bothered. I am very pleased with them. The ones I own are the SPX8 and the SPX7.
Yes, the company is just assembling components from other manufactures. However if you know the electronics industry, you know this is common. And they probably don't have much in the way of customer support. On the other hand, this is a $100.00 photo frame, just how much support is really needed.
The frame is easy to use and the picture quality is excellent. The frame has several "folders" that you can store photo albums in. That allows you to keep Christmas photos in one folder and vacation photos in another and switch between the two. I also use one of the folders to keep all the pictures in so I can see them all instead of just the photos from vacation, Christmas or whatever.
The auto-sizing software also works well. Yea, it takes a while to resize 500 photos. Be patient grasshopper. It is worth the wait.
Recently, the older of the 2 frames (the SPX8) stopped working. Since I have both, I tried plugging the power cord from the other one into the SPX8. Sure enough, the problem wasn't the frame, but the 12 volt power cord. It was harder than it needed to be to find a 9VDC 2A power adapter with the 5.5mm plug. I found one at [...]. Their part number is 1952847 and the cost was $[...]. I thought that was pretty reasonable for a frame that has been on for over 1200 consecutive days. I got the new power adapter last week and the frame is running non-stop again. The link to the exact part I ordered is below.

Others may have their complaints, but I have found these frames to be of good build quality and excellent picture quality. I would not hesitate ordering another Smart Parts frame.

Samsung HMX-H104 HD SSD Flash Memory Camcorder with 16 GB Memory and 10x Optical Zoom Review

(More customer reviews)I now consider myself a collector of camcorders. Still, I demand excellent quality with point and shoot simplicity. My camcorder of choice up until now has been the Samsung SC HMX-20C for its brilliant video quality and amazing still photos, and the ability to take great photos while filming. I saw the HMX-H104 and thought it looks very similar. How is it different?
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Out of the box, the HMX-H104 is sleek and stylish with the trademark bullet shape of the Samsung camcorders. It's smaller and weighs less than its cousin, the SC HMX-20C. The first thing I notice is the case, which has a rubbery grip. I like the feel, I can get a good grip and it feels sturdy in my hands. The little door on the rear leading to all the ports feels like flimsy plastic, but even that is attractive to the eye.
The lens cover closes automatically. I touch it and it feels paper thin, opens easily when I push it. It will keep the dust out. I wonder if it will take a knocking, but I hesitate to challenge it. The SC HMX-20C's lens is also automatic and opens when I push it, but it feels a little sturdier. At least I won't have to remember to put the lens cap back on.
The record button is awkwardly placed. This is true of all the bullet-shaped Samsungs that I own (I have three). It is to the far right of the rear of the camcorder. That makes it difficult to grip the camcorder with the thumb while activating the record button. I'd prefer it more to the left, or better yet on the top of the camcorder. The swivel grip does help with the handling, but it is nowhere as comfortable to hold as a Sanyo Xacti, for instance.
Both camcorders have flash memory onboard or I can choose to use a memory card (both are compatible with SDHC and SC HMX-20C can use MMCPlus). HMX-H104 has double the capacity of its cousin: 16 GB versus 8 GB.
Both camcorders lack a full manual. It is included on a disc, which means I will never read it.
VIDEO
Flip the screen open on the HMX-H104 and it's on, unlike the SC HMX-20C where I need to press the power button. HMX-H104 responds lightening fast. Turning on from sleep mode is even faster.
Both camcorders sport anti-shake technology; but that technology still needs further development, since I have yet to find a camcorder where the image doesn't shake when handheld, especially when the image is zoomed. Tip: use a tripod when possible.
Video quality of both camcorders in broad daylight is comparable. They are both excellent. In lowlight conditions, I prefer the SC HMX-20C (less video noise), but the HMX-H104 is not far behind.
HMX-H104 has wide screen format, great for viewing on my wide screen TV.
PHOTO
Nothing beats SC HMX-20C, which has the best camera in a camcorder I've ever seen. HMX-H104 sometimes give me blurry photos -- very blurry, to the point that I couldn`t even recognize the object or subject in the photo. Okay, I think I didn't press the button just right. But I am using the automatic function and just pressing the photo button every time, not doing anything different and it's great, sometimes better than SC HMX-20C . . . and then it's not. I never know when it will be blurry. Most of the time, the photos look wonderful; but it's not nearly so hard with SC HMX-20C, where I've never had a blurry photo, ever.
Also, I find photos of my son under incandescent light looks better with the SC HMX-20C. It automatically adjusts color and white balance better so that his skin tone looks more natural.
The HMX-H104 has a flash, but it is not as hefty as the pop-up flash of the SC HMX-20C.
When taking photos while filming, I feel there is more of a lag time with HMX-H104. It's not as bad as some others, but SC HMX-20C is better, if only by a split second. That does make a difference when taking photos. When I press that button, that's the photo I want, not a second later.
INTELLI-STUDIO
This is a new one for me. Connect the camcorder to the computer via USB cable and video editing software automatically runs. No need to install software from a disc. Move the video to a folder, edit it right there, make your movie.
Personally, I will not use this feature much. The video editing is basic and will involve a lot of work, unless all I want to do is trim a little and add a title. I like video editing software that includes a wizard -- plug my video in and churn out a movie I can fine-tune to my liking.
SC HMX-20C does not have Intelli-Studio. In fact, I do not own any other camcorder which has this feature. Interesting, but not necessary in my book.
Where HMX-H104 is superior to SC HMX-20C:
* it is smaller: 4 ¾" versus 5"
* it weighs less: 13.7 ounces versus 17.5 ounces (with batteries included)
* it has a rubbery grip making it attractive with a no-slip comfortable to hold, although the matte finish of the SC HMX-20C is also attractive
* it turns on the minute the screen is flipped open versus needing to press the power button
* it has a sleep mode
* it has more internal memory: 16 GB versus 8 GB
* it has a faster boot up and access time
* it has built-in video editing software -- installs automatically to the computer when I plug in my camcorder
* it automatically turns off when its been on too long
* it records in wide screen formatWhere they both excel:
* they have touch screen controls
* nice sleek designs
* they record in full HD
* they have 10X optical zoom
* the grips swivel to adjust for comfort
* automatic lens cap, though they push open easily and the HMX-H104's lens cover is paper thin
* both come with remotes.
Where they both need improvement:
* the record buttons are awkwardly placed
* manuals are on a disc, thought the quick start guide of the SC HMX-20C is more thorough.
Where HMX-H104 is inferior:
* photos while not filming can be completely out of focus and blurry on occasion
* photos while filming have slightly more lag time
* videos are not as good under lowlight conditions
* SC HMX-20C has a heftier pop-up flash
* SC HMX-20C comes with a nice, soft pouch. HMX-H104 does not come with anything to hold it in.
SUMMARY
If you want a camcorder that's a brilliant camera with great video quality, get the SC HMX-20C. It doesn't get better than that.
If you want a slightly smaller camcorder with good video quality, large internal storage capacity, fast start-up, wide screen capability, an automatic camera function that is very good but occasionally acts up, go for HMX-H104. You won't be disappointed.

Brother HL-3040CN Compact Digital Color Printer with Networking Review

(More customer reviews)I have owned color lasers from HP, Xerox, and Lexmark previously. All of them had issues that gave me fits. All had installation and driver issues which cost me many hours of time to resolve.
No such problems here. Plug it in, answer a few questions, and it's printing. I have Windows 7 64 bit, and I was cringing because I expected problems, but I didn't have any. I used the network setup with an Ethernet cable plugged in, and now all the computers in my house can see it and use it. I never did get networking to work right on the Xerox, though I fiddled with settings for the better part of a couple of days.
The print quality of this printer is only fair, but for business use it's more than adequate. I've printed a set of training manuals, which have quite a bit of graphics in them, and not noticed the problems noted by another reviewer. Now it's true that this is not a photo printer, and the quality of the printing is not as good as the Xerox 8560 I had, or various photo printers I've seen. But it's fine for typical reports, slide printouts, and so forth.
As to capacity, I printed about 900 pages with this printer out of the box, and it's still going. A negative reviewer reported problems in getting only a small number of pages with the starter toner, and expressed surprise at the 5% coverage guideline used to estimate pages. Well, every printer I've ever had used that same 5% to estimate page capacity and cost, so I don't see the problem here. I have almost printed the number of pages the printer is supposed to get out of the box without getting any low toner problems.
Another advantage: this printer's replacement cartridges are cheaper than any of the other printers I've owned, even the crayon-like blocks for the Xerox.
The printer also has a draft mode that saves toner, which was not available on any other printer I've owned. I don't expect to use it, but others might find it helpful.
So the bottom line is that the price, speed, quality, and ease of setup make this a very good match for home office or light departmental business color printing. As someone who has been around the block with various color lasers, this one has been a very pleasant surprise.
**Update 14 Jan 2010**
I'll subtract half a star for the marginal front feed mechanism. When I use lightweight card stock through the front feeder, every three pages or so I get no feed and a spurious paper jam. I have to exert a small amount of pressure with my hand on the sheet to ensure that it feeds correctly. If it feeds, the result is good because of the flat paper path, but the front feeder ought to work better than that, especially since it only takes one sheet at a time.

I just began replacing toner cartridges after getting about 1100 pages from the in-the-box set. They cyan cartridge went first and the magenta cartridge a bit later, which was no surprise since my slide theme has a lot of blue in it.
I got another pleasant surprise: the printer demanded new cyan toner after printing 60 of 75 pages for a manual. I thought I would probably have to start over (because Powerpoint is utterly stupid about numbering pages on handouts). No problem, though. The printer stays on for toner cartridge replacement, and it's easy as pie to do it. Just don't forget to slide the gizzy back and forth that cleans the corona wire. After putting the cover back down, the printer picked up where it left off and knocked out the last fifteen pages.
In other news, I found a 256M DIMM from an old laptop, and upgraded the printer's memory. Really easy, though of course you do have to turn it off for that one. There's an exposed slot on the side to put the memory in, and it came right up when the printer was turned back on. The printer is faster now, and doesn't tie up my computer as long on these 75 page print jobs.
The printer status software advised me of a firmware update, which I applied. That was easy too, and it improved the print quality somewhat.
The only bad news is that the front feed mechanism for non-standard stock is definitely sub-par. I needed to print some labels through the front feed, and had the same problem with phantom jams that I had earlier with card stock. You have to hold the stock juuuuust riiiiiight to get it feed correctly. That's the only major flaw in a printer than has been a very pleasant surprise overall.
