My fax and printer went out on the same day (what a week!) and I replaced my plain paper HP fax and my HP 1100 printer with this Canon L80.
I use it for everything! No problems, easy setup, clear faxes. After 2 months of constant use as both a fax and a printer, I have no problems with this unit.

Canon L170 Laser Fax Printer Review

Canon L170 Laser Fax Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Now that it's up and running it's so reliable and easy to use that we don't even think about it. It's great to have a really fast fax machine that also doubles as a USB laser printer and a copy machine.
Three "heads ups" for you:
First, there might be a learning curve if you've never owned a fax machine before. You have to put this together and it takes a few minutes. The pieces seem flimsy and you might wonder if it's going to work but once you get it together if it works fine.
Second, the manual is printed in a very small font that's hard to read even with my reading glasses on.
Third, with this machine you get a "starter toner cartridge" that is good for about 300 pages. To get a "real" toner cartridge you have to spend well over another hundred dollars. The toner cartridge costs more than half the price of the machine. You may also have to buy a USB cable.
So, with the toner cartridge and the service contract (which I think you're foolish not to buy) and sales tax in my state included it was upwards of $500.00 to get this thing up and running, but now it's a faithful servant that just sits there and works. So far so good.

Panasonic KX-FL511 High Speed, up to 12 ppm, Laser Fax/Copier Machine Review

Panasonic KX-FL511 High Speed, up to 12 ppm, Laser Fax/Copier Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(This is mostly my review of the KX-FL501, with relevant changes)
It performs quite well, when it's working. The quick-scan feature is total gold, I can toss several pages through then walk away and do something else with them while it faxes.
But the toner. Oh, god, the toner.
I'm used to laser printers whining at me on the message display about low or "out" toner, and I'm just as used to ignoring them. The helpful people at Panasonic have decided that they don't like people ignoring those messages, so they include a pleasant beep. And when I say "pleasant", I mean it gives me nightmares. When the time comes for the machine to be replaced (and it will come, oh yes, it will come), I may run an extension cord outside so it can actually be actively beeping as I go Office Space on it.
Anyway, toner. To guard against the possibility of someone with super-human will tuning out the beeping (or perhaps to guard against the deaf), they also have included a helpful print out. On this print out are several large bars of varying shades, designed, presumably, to illustrate visually to you exactly how low your toner is.
I have never seen this page print in anything but a perfect, pristine manner. The bars are wonderful in their consistency, with nary a hint of lightness. While this would be an excellent demo of print quality, as a notification that the toner is low, I must admit to some confusion. It's *perfect*. It *never prints light*. So as far as I can tell, the only function it actually serves is to *use more toner*. Quite a bit of toner, considering the large black and near-black bars.
In amusing phone conversations with Panasonic, I've determined that either A) there is no way to disable this helpful function or B) there is, but they require a more substantial bribe than I've offered to offset their loss in toner revenue.
It gets better.
After it's printed two or three of these frame-worthy gems over the course of a week, it decides to play hard ball. Now it claims that the toner is gone. Out. No toner remains. This is communicated in two ways. One, the beep. Only this time it's incessant. The beep just goes on and on until you replace the toner, unplug the machine, or throw it out the window (and perhaps even then). It also...*prints out a notice*. That's right, you read that correctly; to inform you that there is no toner, it *uses toner*. I'm sure you've guessed the best part already - this notice, like the joyous banners of grayscale earlier, also prints perfectly. It's never been even a little light.
Now we engage in a little off-Broadway production for the benefit of the fax machine. "Ahh, pity," we say, opening the machine and removing the toner unit. "We're out of toner. Guess I'll have to get more toner. I'll just open this package over here," we continue, as one of us makes crinkling noises in the background, and the other grimly shakes the toner unit from side to side. "Ah, good, I'll just pop that in, then," we say, winking, as we remove the toner drum, whisper an incantation over it, and pop it back in. "Whew, good as new. I'm sure glad we don't have to worry about any light printing thanks to the Panasonic engineers," we shout with glee, as we put the toner unit back in and close it up.
If we've said the incantations correctly, the fax machine accepts our tribute and pretends everything is ok for a couple days, when the process is then repeated. Usually we perform the ritual twice successfully before it tires of our blandishments and insists the toner is out, despite the repeated evidence of our eyes. At this point we surrender to its whims and put a new drum unit in.
The drums aren't *too* bad, price-wise. I just have a minor philosophical objection to tossing them out when there's still clearly good toner left in them. But aside from that, it's a worthwhile machine.

Brother FAX1820C Inkjet Printer Review

Brother FAX1820C Inkjet Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Brother 1820C has some nice features BUT it cleans the ink cartridges automatically and often. This uses up all the ink every few months, whether you print anything or not. I don't do any color faxing or printing, but I have to replace the color cartridges every 3-4 months, so that in a year I spend more on ink that I don't even use than the cost of a new 1820C machine. This is an ink guzzler. It will break your pocketbook unless you are wealthy and money does not matter to you. In addition, there seems to be no way to use the black ink option when the color ink is depleted by the constant automatic cleaning. You MUST replace all 4 ink cartridges every 3-4 months or the fax will not work. It costs a veritable fortune. I cannot recommend this machine except for multimillionaires.

If you need a dedicated fax machine for a small or medium sized off then the Brother 2800 may be just the right choice. It is a solid performer that offers a low cost per page and includes pretty much every feature that you would need in a black and white fax machine.
Nowadays it is not particularly sexy to "just" be a fax machine, but in many situations you are better off having a fax machine seperate from your copy machine, seperate from your printer. At our 20 person office that is certainly true. We had a multifunction machine and it was used to much which created lots of complexity for those of us sharing it. LInes waiting for a fax to be received so we could print, waiting to make copies while a long document is printing, and confusion over how to install and setup access for everyone's PC.
We tried to find a less expensive standalone machine but could not find one that seemed well buiilt and cost effective. The color fax machines are ink jet based and cost a lot more per page. My experience with inkjets is that they also require more maintenance. The Borthe 2800 has a straight through paper path which has not jammed for us, and we've had no issues with paper feeding.
I think that for a really small office of 1-5 people that a multi-function unit makes sense, but for anything larger you need seperate machines. If that's the case, the Brother machine is a good choice in fax machine with its laser output, high paper volume, full feature set, and relatively simple interface.

A solid laser-fax machine at an accessible price, the 2800 zips out 10 pages per minute, printing on standard plain paper. Its price makes it ideal for home office use--finally, an affordable alternative to thermal transfer or ink-jet machines for those of us in small offices.
The 14.4K modem, integrated telephone handset, fax forwarding, paging and remote retrieval, 108 auto-dial locations, and broadcasting to up to 158 locations all combine to make the 2800 an impressive value. The 2800 is compatible with call waiting/caller ID and distinctive ring. Other features include a 20-page automatic document feeder and a 200-sheet paper tray, accommodating both letter and legal-size paper.

Brother IntelliFax 2820 Laser Fax Machine and Copier Review

Brother IntelliFax 2820 Laser Fax Machine and Copier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're in the market for a fax machine this is the one. I also owned the Brother 2800. This is the new and revised version of the 2800. Apparently Brother does improve upon their faults. You can see my review on the 2800 and the downfalls. For a re-cap:
1. 2800 had paper jams when using old paper. The 2820 has a paper feeder like their printers which greatly reduces jams. (I also own brothers laser printer) Now I can use recycled (one-side already printed) paper and not have to deal with jams. Also 2820 holds much more paper in its tray, so you wont have to worry about running out.
2. 2820 has a new feed system which reduces jams when faxing out. I had problems faxing 20+ pages with the 2800, now none with 2820. However they say there is a limit to 20 pages (just add more pages as they feed through).
3. The only downfall is the toner is slightly more expensive. It does print more pages, but does cost a bit more. Fax machine is more expensive also.
Overall, if you don't want to deal with the 2800 problems then pay the extra money for the 2820 and feel confident with its performance. If money is an issue, get the 2800. Personally the few extra bucks is worth it over aggravation when trying to fax/receive.
Another added bonus feature: This fax can also connect to the computer through USB allowing to work as a printer. I currently have this set-up and works very well. Have no issues priting with this fax machine. Great feature if you don't want to buy a printer. (2800 does not have this feature)
