I'm disappointed with this label printer, but I don't use it very much. Loading labels should be very easy according to the instructions, but in practice, it isn't easy to get them properly lined up and in the position to print properly. The printer also is wasteful of the labels, sending several blank labels out before printing the first one. If I had it to do over, I would skip buying this printer and print my labels on my laser printer.

Konica Minolta Magicolor 2400W Color Laser Printer (5250220-100) Review

Konica Minolta Magicolor 2400W Color Laser Printer (5250220-100)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the second Konica-Minolta Magicolor color laser I have purchased. The first was a 2430DL which I purchased for my office. Basically the printers are the same except that the 2400W does not have ethernet connectivity, or an LED read-out (the printer messages from the 2400W pop up in a window on your computer screen), and the 2400W costs about $100 less.
Printing quality is the same on both units. Warm up time is quick, pages come out fast, and quality is good. Text quality is excellent. We also have a $10,000 color laser at work and the Konica units print text just as well and graphics almost as well.
Obviously I liked these printers enough to buy a second one, however I only give the product 4 stars because neither my 2430DL or the 2400W worked right out of the box and the accompanying "documentation" (if you can call it that) is a total joke.
Installation of my 2400W conked out with a message saying, and I quote: "Put Cyan toner". Huh? I opened up the unit and the magenta toner was on top. The rotate toner cartridge button refused to work and, as I said before, the manual is useless. I had to call tech support. Eventually we discovered that the magenta and cyan toner cartridges were switched. When switched back the unit performed perfectly.
Installation of my 2430DL appeared to work but the prints initially were faded and the toner rubbed off. Another call to tech support revealed that two clips that are supposed to hold the paper tightly against the fuser were not down all the way. When these were seated properly the unit functioned perfectly.
The installation instructions contain one page of sketches that look like they were made by a grade-schooler. Worthless. The thick "manual" consists of only one-quarter of one page of generic information which is repeated a bazillion times in a bazillion different languages, 4 per page. Curious, but utterly worthless.
On the plus side, Konica's tech support is excellent. The calls are toll-free, I only had to wait on hold a few minutes each time, and I got to speak to native English speakers who were very knowledgeable, polite, and helpful.
Here are a couple of other tidbits which may be of interest. The 2400W only connects via a USB cable, which is NOT included. Also, the printer uses 4 toner cartridges: black, cyan, magenta, and blue. The combined cost of theses cartridges is almost as much as the printer sells for at discount office stores. And... the toner cartridges which come with the printer are "starter" cartridges which are only one-third full, so get ready to spend some $$$ on replacement cartridges.
Power consumption on this unit is high compared to my previous home laser (an HP Laserjet 6L). When the Konica unit is switched on my room lights flicker constantly, even when not printing. So I turn the thing off after every use. Normally you can leave it on all the time and it will go into power saver mode by itself after about 20-30 minutes (by the way, you will have to get used to the loud clunk it makes when going to sleep - initially it will scare you because 20 minutes after making a print you have forgotten all about the printer, and, as I say it is a LOUD clunk!)
Both the 2430DL and the 2400W have a paper tray with a complete enclosure, which is very nice for keeping the paper clean and out of the way.
Duplexing is manual. You have to print one side then put the sheet(s) back into the printer upside down for the second side.
So, in summary: some installation headaches, great tech support, worthless documentation, but very nice printing, especially for the money.

Manual English-Spanish Typewriter Review

Manual English-Spanish Typewriter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered an Olivetti Linea manual typewriter and expected to recieve a brand new item. It arrived in a rather tattered and " well traveled " box. Upon closer inspection the single wall thin cardboard box showed signs of other labels having been removed from the box at another time. Although everything was intact upon opening the box after removing the plastic bag surrounding the typewriter it was obvious this was not a new machine. There was oil residue on some of the keytops, 4 type bars were bent, all of the type looked as it needed a good cleaning as they were beginning to fill in with ribbon residue. A section of the upper plastic cover ( access cover to the ribbon spools ) showed signs of abrasive wear.
After carefully removing the shipping blocks from the carriage assembly there was a bind in the carriage from the left side and also in the center travel of the carriage resulting in uneven spacing in characters typed in these parts of carriage travel.
Upon installation of the platten advance knob, in a few turns there was binding in the rotation of the carriage. At this point I knew this was a defective piece of equipment and most likely something that had been returned by a previous customer.
When I called the dealer and explained this situation to them I also read the information from a pink color card that was packed with the typewriter and I questioned why the customer name was shown as Olivetti. It was at this point the dealer admitted that an error must have taken place and that the pink card was in fact a Repair Form !
I was issued a return authorization which I recived in the mail a few weeks later and returned this typewriter per the instructions and the return shippping was at My Own Expense !
I was sent a replacement typewriter and once again it arrived in a tattered and worn box which I feel is just not durable enough for something of this weight. The replacement typewriter had binding in the carriage, the Tabulation system was totally innoperative, the upper access cover did not even match the rest of the plastic case nor did it fit properly. I am assuming this cover may have been from a different machine. Additionally the piece of decorative trim from the front of the typewriter just above the keyboard was laying on top of the keyboard when I opened the box as the glue holding it in place must have dried out and the trim just fell off. Again, I found another Pink Repair Card inside of the box with this typewriter so I immediately made arrangements to return this one and did not want to bother having a replacement sent. Once again return shipping was at My Expense.
Should you buy one of these typewriters, even if it is a brand new and not used ones like I recieved do not expect this to be like the manual typewriters of years ago. Although the basic framework for the typing section appears durable there are other things that are not. More than likely you will not find any local repair shop for these either. The platten material is very thin compared to the manual typewriters of years ago and other deficiencies were noted as well.
Should you decide to buy one of these take my advice, Insist on having it Well Packed and Double Boxed ! The original box is just not that durable and other than the styrofoam forms on each end of the typewriter the box offers very little protection against shipping damage.
These machines are made in a factory in India and I doubt they are manufactured by Olivetti, they may just have a license to put that name on them. Although it looks authentic and similar to the Manual Office Typewriters we used a few decades ago, the durability and build quality have little similarity.
I have been using typewriters for over 50 years both manual, electric, electronic, portable and office models. I have also used Teletype Machines for worldwide printed communications long before The Internet so I feel I have had enough experience to qualify this review.

Panasonic KX-FL501 Plain-Paper Laser Fax/copy Machine Review

Panasonic KX-FL501 Plain-Paper Laser Fax/copy Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It performs reasonably well. It can be fussy about feeding multiple pages to send, so it's generally best to feed them through one at a time. That's really a pity, because the quick-scan feature, when it works, is total gold.
But the toner. Oh, god, the toner.
I'm used to laser printers whining at me on the message display about low or "out" toner, and I'm just as used to ignoring them. The helpful people at Panasonic have decided that they don't like people ignoring those messages, so they include a pleasant beep. And when I say "pleasant", I mean it gives me nightmares. When the time comes for the machine to be replaced (and it will come, oh yes, it will come), I may run an extension cord outside so it can actually be actively beeping as I go Office Space on it.
Anyway, toner. To guard against the possibility of someone with super-human will tuning out the beeping (or perhaps to guard against the deaf), they also have included a helpful print out. On this print out are several large bars of varying shades, designed, presumably, to illustrate visually to you exactly how low your toner is.
I have never seen this page print in anything but a perfect, pristine manner. The bars are wonderful in their consistency, with nary a hint of lightness. While this would be an excellent demo of print quality, as a notification that the toner is low, I must admit to some confusion. It's *perfect*. It *never prints light*. So as far as I can tell, the only function it actually serves is to *use more toner*. Quite a bit of toner, considering the large black and near-black bars.
In amusing phone conversations with Panasonic, I've determined that either A) there is no way to disable this helpful function or B) there is, but they require a more substantial bribe than I've offered to offset their loss in toner revenue.
It gets better.
After it's printed two or three of these frame-worthy gems over the course of a week, it decides to play hard ball. Now it claims that the toner is gone. Out. No toner remains. This is communicated in two ways. One, the beep. Only this time it's incessant. The beep just goes on and on until you replace the toner, unplug the machine, or throw it out the window (and perhaps even then). It also...*prints out a notice*. That's right, you read that correctly; to inform you that there is no toner, it *uses toner*. I'm sure you've guessed the best part already - this notice, like the joyous banners of greyscale earlier, also prints perfectly. It's never been even a little light.
Now we engage in a little off-broadway production for the benefit of the fax machine. "Ahh, pity," we say, opening the machine and removing the toner unit. "We're out of toner. Guess I'll have to get more toner. I'll just open this package over here," we continue, as one of us makes crinkling noises in the background, and the other grimly shakes the toner unit from side to side. "Ah, good, I'll just pop that in, then," we say, winking, as we remove the toner drum, whisper an incantation over it, and pop it back in. "Whew, good as new. I'm sure glad we don't have to worry about any light printing thanks to the Panasonic engineers," we shout with glee, as we put the toner unit back in and close it up.
If we've said the incantations correctly, the fax machine accepts our tribute and pretends everything is ok for a couple days, when the process is then repeated. Usually we perform the ritual twice successfully before it tires of our blandishments and insists the toner is out, despite the repeated evidence of our eyes. At this point we surrender to its whims and put a new drum unit in.
We lived with it...until we upgraded to the KX-FL511, which works *exactly the same way*, except it is much better at scanning in multiple pages unattended.

My workplace uses Seiko 420 and 450 label printers to print address labels and Code 39 barcodes. As with other reviewers, we have found that these printers have difficulty keeping output alignment straight when using labels less than the maximum height supported by the printer (i.e., the 1.13 x 3.5 inch small address labels), even when the label guides are fitted to the label roll. When the printer is upright, output tends to either slant towards one side of the label and can print outside the physical margins of the label. Our solution to this problem is to turn the printer on its side. This usually helps to keep output alignment straight. The SLP 450 seems to keep a tighter grip on the labels than the 420; so the 450 is a little tougher to fix when labels mis-feed.
We've had no problems using the bundled SmartLabel software for printing single labels, though we typically use Microsoft Word or Excel to print multiple labels at a time. I've noticed that our printer technicians sometimes have difficulty setting up the label printers, but the trick is to ensure that paper size, margins, orientation (portrait versus landscape) are set properly.
Overall, the SLP 420 and 450 printers are decent products, though maybe a bit tricky for mainstream users to set up or troubleshoot. The SLP 420 is slow when printing in Fine mode (203 dpi), so choose an SLP 450 over the SLP 420 if you intend to print many labels daily, because the SLP 450 is much faster. Perhaps Seiko could move the label guides closer to the traction feed in a future product revision to help keep output consistently straight. Seiko's newest label printers are a good fit if your shop already uses Seiko or compatible label printers. Their ownership costs become competitive with Brother label printers when the Seiko printers are paired with high-capacity rolls (some of which require an external label tray).
