Brother Magenta Toner Cartridge (TN-210M) Review

I acquired a Brother MFC-9320CW all-in-one printer last year and was very disappointed when the "toner low" message popped up in the menu window after running only 50 or so copies. Finally at approximately 250 copies, the toner in all three color cartridges ran out, so I was obliged to replace them. The first few pages were a bit light, but now the cartridges perform better than the originals that came with the unit. Cartridges are super easy to install and colors are vivid. Time will tell if I actually get the 1400 copies stated on the package, but if not, there's a way to extend cartridge life. Just Google the Brother printer model and add "toner override" then scroll down the forum for instructions.

It seems like an good product. We've been using it for over a month and a paper for a master's degree is being printed with it so it's getting a workout. So far it's working fine and quite a bit cheaper than the OEM version. WARNING - no instructions were included and there is more to it than just swapping out drums. You have to reset the counter in the printer or the lights stay on and annoy the crap out of you. Go on line to the Brother site and they have step by step instructions including how to reset the counter. Anyone who can read can handle this.

These toners are easy to install. One thing though, after the first warning of these toners being low I take them out and check the little round window to see if there is still toner. If there is, I wind back the gear with a peg on it back to its original position. I recently did this with all three colors as it was reported they were going low. After winding back the gears, the printer performed perfectly for another month with a moderate amount of color printing. Finally, the low toner warnings went off again and since there appeared no more toner, I installed new ones. I have a closet full of these consumables and look forward to many great years printing with these printers. (We have 6 of them)

Hidden Menus for Brother 9840cdw
**Toner Reset Menu - Open front door of printer. Press the 'clear' button once or twice. There are two capacities for each color. It will start counting down from whichever you choose.
**Everything Else Reset Menu - Press '3' and '9' at the same time. Hidden reset menu will appear. Select item, select reset.

Some printers replace their drum each time you replace the toner. This drives up the price of the ink. Brother has opted to keep the drum (actually this is all the drums--one for each color) separate. It's a must have product. Amazon had the best price that I could find on the web. When you need it and your printer stops functioning what are you going to do?--buy one.

Brother DR350 Drum Unit Review

The cartridge that this drum holds will refuse to let you print after a certain time, alleging that the toner life is ended.
This will fly in the face of the evidence of crisp pages, with evidently a decent amount of toner left. This is not like the old days, where the pages continue to print, and the print quality degrades as toner dissipates. Nope, this is a "We'll decide for you when you go get another cartridge" move by the manufacturer.Countermeasures against this ploy:
1. Shake cartridge, replace
2. After a while, #1 won't work. Then, open cover, Options, *00, close cover
2. After a while, #2 won't work. Then, get a black Sharpie and cover the laser window on the non-gear side of the cartridge.
Should get you closer to getting your money's worth.

Even though this cartridge is a compatible and not a brand name Brother toner cartridge, it has performed as well as the brand name cartridge since I received it. The sellers shipping was reasonably fast and I am satisfied with the purchase overall. I would be happy to buy another one of these toners in the future and the best part is that it costs about $40 less than what you would give for the name brand cartridge.

Yes, these Brother toners do only count the number of pages printed to determine the amount of toner left. When one of the CMY color runs out, they all run out at the same time. Even though the printer may say its completely out of toner, that might not be the case always. To reset the toner (if you know there's ample amount of toner still left), unscrew the two screws on the side, pop off the side cover, and turn the gray gear wheal counterclockwise 90 degrees.

I've been using HP stuff since the first scientific calculator, the HP-32, that came out in 1973. It used to be rock solid, designed by engineers to be used by engineers. Sadly, it's now cheap junk. The scanners in HP's all-in-one's seemed designed to fail in the thirteenth month after purchase.
Some of HP's recent printers do not even implement their own Printer Control Language properly (HP PCL).
This Brother printer works. It implements PCL5 correctly, as well as its emulation of PostScript. I've networked computers for fifteen years, so setup went very easily. The hardest part was hauling the CD-ROM to the various computers on the network, since Windows did not have the driver built in. A no-brainer.
The supplies work out to 1.4 cents a page (toner and drum). Hard to beat that.

I was initially worried about the quality, but I have been consistently impressed by the high quality, the price is fantastic, and I love that this seller doesn't hide any extra costs in shipping, as a lot of generic product sellers do.
I've been using this ink, both black and color, for over two years without ever having a problem. I taught at a school without a photocopier available to me, so I print out dozens of pages daily, and sometimes hundreds at a time. I print in black and white and color, including overhead transparencies and occasionally pictures. The quality consistently has been good, and I have not noticed any difference in quality from the Brother ink. (I did try changing to a different generic brand on Amazon to very poor results.)
You might not get as long a cartridge life as you do from the Brother original - I'm not sure, though I've read this criticism - but at this price, who cares?

I was looking for a cheaper alternative in purchasing ink jet cartridges and happened to find these that were compatible with my Brother MFC-210C printer. So far, I've been pleased with how they have performed, and I got the right number of black, magenta, cyan and yellow cartridges. With kids, we go through a lot of ink even with it on fast normal and not printing out photos. I am very pleased with the results and would plan to order these again as well as order them for a new Brother printer I recently purchased for my daughter.

Brother HL-3040CN Compact Digital Color Printer with Networking Review

Brother HL-3040CN Compact Digital Color Printer with Networking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned color lasers from HP, Xerox, and Lexmark previously. All of them had issues that gave me fits. All had installation and driver issues which cost me many hours of time to resolve.
No such problems here. Plug it in, answer a few questions, and it's printing. I have Windows 7 64 bit, and I was cringing because I expected problems, but I didn't have any. I used the network setup with an Ethernet cable plugged in, and now all the computers in my house can see it and use it. I never did get networking to work right on the Xerox, though I fiddled with settings for the better part of a couple of days.
The print quality of this printer is only fair, but for business use it's more than adequate. I've printed a set of training manuals, which have quite a bit of graphics in them, and not noticed the problems noted by another reviewer. Now it's true that this is not a photo printer, and the quality of the printing is not as good as the Xerox 8560 I had, or various photo printers I've seen. But it's fine for typical reports, slide printouts, and so forth.
As to capacity, I printed about 900 pages with this printer out of the box, and it's still going. A negative reviewer reported problems in getting only a small number of pages with the starter toner, and expressed surprise at the 5% coverage guideline used to estimate pages. Well, every printer I've ever had used that same 5% to estimate page capacity and cost, so I don't see the problem here. I have almost printed the number of pages the printer is supposed to get out of the box without getting any low toner problems.
Another advantage: this printer's replacement cartridges are cheaper than any of the other printers I've owned, even the crayon-like blocks for the Xerox.
The printer also has a draft mode that saves toner, which was not available on any other printer I've owned. I don't expect to use it, but others might find it helpful.
So the bottom line is that the price, speed, quality, and ease of setup make this a very good match for home office or light departmental business color printing. As someone who has been around the block with various color lasers, this one has been a very pleasant surprise.
**Update 14 Jan 2010**
I'll subtract half a star for the marginal front feed mechanism. When I use lightweight card stock through the front feeder, every three pages or so I get no feed and a spurious paper jam. I have to exert a small amount of pressure with my hand on the sheet to ensure that it feeds correctly. If it feeds, the result is good because of the flat paper path, but the front feeder ought to work better than that, especially since it only takes one sheet at a time.
**Update 21 Mar 2010**
I just began replacing toner cartridges after getting about 1100 pages from the in-the-box set. They cyan cartridge went first and the magenta cartridge a bit later, which was no surprise since my slide theme has a lot of blue in it.
I got another pleasant surprise: the printer demanded new cyan toner after printing 60 of 75 pages for a manual. I thought I would probably have to start over (because Powerpoint is utterly stupid about numbering pages on handouts). No problem, though. The printer stays on for toner cartridge replacement, and it's easy as pie to do it. Just don't forget to slide the gizzy back and forth that cleans the corona wire. After putting the cover back down, the printer picked up where it left off and knocked out the last fifteen pages.
In other news, I found a 256M DIMM from an old laptop, and upgraded the printer's memory. Really easy, though of course you do have to turn it off for that one. There's an exposed slot on the side to put the memory in, and it came right up when the printer was turned back on. The printer is faster now, and doesn't tie up my computer as long on these 75 page print jobs.
The printer status software advised me of a firmware update, which I applied. That was easy too, and it improved the print quality somewhat.
The only bad news is that the front feed mechanism for non-standard stock is definitely sub-par. I needed to print some labels through the front feed, and had the same problem with phantom jams that I had earlier with card stock. You have to hold the stock juuuuust riiiiiight to get it feed correctly. That's the only major flaw in a printer than has been a very pleasant surprise overall.

Average Reviews:

Just a minor point of correction to the previous review that addresses the distinction between the DRUM units and the TONER cartridges: first, when you purchase the printer, it arrives with 4 drum units that ALREADY HAVE "STARTER" TONER CARTRIDGES IN THEM. This may be lead to some of the confusion, but, yes, they are distinctly separate products. Second, the previous review indicates that the drum units are good for "5,000" pages and that you would therefore replace the toner cartridges 3 times before replacing the drum. In point of fact, the drum life is rated at "15,000" pages. Consequently, you would replace the toner 8-9 times IF you use the TN-160 toner product --rated at 1,600 pages-- or closer to 6-7 times if you use the more economical TN-210 product which is rated for 2,100 pages.

This cartridge will disable your printer once it (the cartridge) tells your printer it's empty. The cartridge has a window that is closed (blocked) by toner. This window runs through the cartridge from one side to the other. When the toner is full, the window is blocked, when the toner is seemingly empty, a laser is able to shine through the cartridge one side to the other thus signaling to the printer to shut down for cartridge replacement. I have found that when you obstruct this window with a simple piece of masking tape, you will have at least 33-50% more toner left. I'll leave any manufacturer motive speculation up to you.

Brother MFC-490CW Color Inkjet Wireless All-in-One Printer Review

Brother MFC-490CW Color Inkjet Wireless All-in-One Printer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was skeptical of Brother printers, but after having a miserable experience with HP trying to get a 6380 to work (two broken units delivered; two units returned; 4 hours on phone with tech support), I broadened my search and found consistently good reviews of this printer. I live in a mixed household (Windows and Mac), which also eliminated many competitors. Finding it on sale tipped the scales.
Out of the box, the printer is compact, has a low profile, and is a bit sleeker looking than the competitors. Overall workmanship is solid.
Only exception is the paper tray which feels a bit flimsy, but nothing that would deter me. There is also no easy way to feed envelopes or letterhead without pulling out the papertray -- and to run envelopes, you need to remove regular paper since the bypass tray is only for photo paper.
Fax machine is a nice feature to have and, thankfully, it does not come with a phone handset attachment which would just take up space for no reason.
Per the manual, the printer can NOT handle both wireless and wired USB/network connection at the same time. Not a problem for me at all as the unit will only be used via wireless.
It is energy star rated and defaults to putting itself to sleep after a period of non-use. Startup out of sleep is very fast when you send a wireless document. I tend to unplug my power strip when I won't be using the computer for a while and was afraid that the settings would wipe, but when I plugged it back in the printer sprang back to life with all wireless configurations intact.
Set up was pretty simple. Following the quick start instructions went fine. Found my wireless router, connected, printed test page, no problem. Installed drivers/software on Windows XP, and it looks to be a lot less heavy than HP's full software. Only wrinkle in installation is that it asked me several times to connect/verify the wireless connection (each piece of software plus the hardware basically asked me the same thing a few times... I probably didn't need to enter it so many times, but it wasn't difficult so I decided to be safe). No problems with Mac install either. Very simple.
Overall, the set up was easy and quick. Brother could learn a bit from HP in terms of integrating the documentation and the printer set up a little bit better, but that's a minor issue. It was easy and the thing worked right away.
Automatic document feeder on top of the machine is a great feature to have in a printer at this level, and it works well.
The wireless integration is well done. I was able to print wirelessly immediately, and, quite a pleasant surprise to find that the "scan" feature actually worked as advertised.
Scanning was as simple as dropping a document into the feeder, hitting scan, selecting which of my two wireless PCs I wanted to receive the doc, and then hitting start. Seamlessly scanned and dropped the PDF onto my hard drive.
Ditto for requesting an OCR of the paper document. OCR quality is pretty amazing. I haven't had experience with desktop/consumer OCR in a few years, so maybe they are all of similar quality now, but I was pleasantly surprised. No formatting came over, but I was able to take a memo sitting on my desk and scan/OCR it in a few seconds. The text dropped into a plain text file and had no errors in text recognition or punctuation.
Print speed appears to be slower than the box claims. I haven't tested it, but it feels slower than a lower quality HP deskjet it replaced. Could be a function of the wireless throughput. I'm not terribly concerned since this is for a low-volume home setup. Print quality is good, not fantastic (I will play with settings and see if I can't improve that). Photo prints onto plain paper are not as clear as HP.
I am also very happy with the low noise level. The printer is quiet (much more so than my prior HP inkjet) and it doesn't rattle and shake and rumble like my prior HP inkjet.
If you're having trouble getting the photo paper bypass to work, I had to resort to the manual. You need to physically move the bypass tray forward and lock it into place -- there is no software setting or configuration switch in the print properties. (You can select paper type and all the normal options there, but not the bypass.) Then when done, you pull the paper tray out and physically move the bypass tray back into standby position. At first I was annoyed, but given the frequency of printing via the bypass, I don't care. And I figure not having two paper paths probably means less chance of paper jams.
The model higher than this one is essentially the exact same unit but with a phone handset and a built in digital answering machine. I didn't think that was worth an extra $50, but if you need an answering machine it might be worth it to save footprint.
So far so good. I highly recommend this printer. For the price, features, ease of set up, size, and quiet, it is a very good deal.
I had tried the HP 6380 which had (to me) slightly better print quality, but lacked the automatic document feeder fax and the very well integrated wireless software. I also was unable to get multiple of them to work -- fatal errors on hardware, plus bad customer support, so I gave up and went to this unit... glad I did. I saved money and got a printer better suited for me.
I will update this review in a few weeks if I have any issues with reliability.

Brother Personal Labeler Machine, White (PT90) Review

Brother Personal Labeler Machine, White (PT90)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a very organized person, and I wanted to streamline the look of my filing systems. Martha Stewart recommended the Brother P Touch on her shows many times, and I figured I'd give it a try.
Here are some thoughts and comments:
* Sucks up battery life like crazy. I attempted to use NEW yet out-of-the-package AAA batteries (expiration 2009) and the machine would stop printing and power off. You MUST use extremely new/fresh batteries, but really, I suggest that you take this opportunity to buy yourself a battery recharger with several rechargeable batteries if you are going to use this product. I also think an upgrade to this product would be the ability to operate it two ways : with batteries AND electric power source.
*There is a little piece of paper included somewhere in the packet that is very easy to miss, but is crucial to its operation. It is of a diagram which shows you that you must first REMOVE A PIECE OF THIN FOAM from the machine before installing the tape. This is NOT in the instruction booklet!
*$10+ for replacement cartridges seems expensive, seeing as how they do not last very long. Think ahead and buy your cartridges online at a discount so that you do not find yourself at the office supply store mid-project, paying way too much for retail.
*Colored tape makes it easy for you to color code your files. Though I prefer the plain black/white, you can use different color tapes for specific projects. For instance, financial files could be GREEN. There are several colors available but I did not find them visually pleasing, so I'm sticking with the black on white.
*In addition to color coding, there are functions which allow you to BOLD, ITALICIZE, and UNDERLINE, as well as choose which border you'd like to use. One of the more fun borders is CANDY, which looks like a candy wrapper. It's fun and feminine, and I use that one for my designer files. But there are more plain borders, as well as a masculine WOOD look. Others options are font size ; normal, 1/2 and X2 and width, which you can use to adjust for more characters. For example, a short word such as BANK is short enough to fit X2 on a file folder, whereas FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 2007 could be in regular size font and on 2 lines, to fit the folders. It's quite user friendly that way.
*The keyboard is obviously small, and therefore so are the keys. If you have big fingers, or long nails, use the eraser-side of a pencil on the keyboard.
*As with any new gadget, it will take some time to figure out how to use the product, but the instructions are easy to understand, overall.
Unfortunately, I paid full retail for this, but the price at Amazon is HALF of what I paid at the office supply store. I'm going to buy one from Amazon, with tapes, for my sister for her birthday. I think it makes a great gift, everyone will love this item. (And perhaps include the aforementioned batteries/charger as well!)
I have given the item 3 stars instead of 4 because Brother is soaking its customers with expensive replacement tapes. Doesn't seem very ethical to me. Also, new models are introduced to the market all the time, so while you may think you will use this for several years, it is more likely that newer, better models will become attractive with more experience and use. In this sense, the item is not cost-effective, especially since repair/replacement is probably more expensive than just buying a new one.

Brother MFC-9970CDW Color Laser All-in-One with Wireless Networking and Duplex Review

I just received my Brother MFC-9970CDW a little under a week ago. So far, the print quality is significantly better than what I experienced with the Brother MFC-9840. It's almost night and day with regard to color quality. I never liked the quality of the 9840, but the 9970 provides me with much greater color quality. They certainly made an improvement in this area.
The 9970 touch screen is nice to have also. It's not a "Wow" factor for me, but it's something different, but nothing to be desired.
The 9970 seems to be made with cheaper quality plastics, which seems to make the printer a bit more fragile, but we'll see how it holds up...I've only had it for less than a week. But with that said, the 9970 also seems to be a bit more (and only a bit more) slim compared to the 9840.
My only problem thus far with the MFC-9970 is that the installation cd that came with the printer did not work properly on my Windows XP laptop. I had to go to Brother website and download the most recent installation drivers and software package. This delayed my setup of the printer a bit, because I had to restart at least two times before I realized I should just try the Brother website. Once I did, I didn't have any other problems installing the printer drivers.
I can now use my printer for business presentations and not having to run to Staples or Kinkos because the 9840 color print jobs were too embarrassing to show any client. Glad I took another chance with Brother with the 9970 because I'll finally get my money's worth.
I haven't really checked out the Control Center 4 that comes with this printer model, but hopefully they've made some improvements here too.
I'd recommend this printer to a small business looking for an all-in-one copy/print/scan/fax solution.

I bought this to scan and make the occasional copy. I have another printer I make color copies on. It is perfect for what I bought it for. It was easy to set up and comes with software to scan with. I think Amazon has a better price than where I bought it from. I have it plugged into my home network but it has wireless if I ever need it. I am happy with the purchase!
