HP LaserJet 4050N Network Printer Review

As someone who has used, recommended, and supported printers in workgroups for nearly 10 years, I've come across a couple of truly outstanding printers. This is one of them. It's fast, the text quality is outstanding, and using the manual feeds and output tray, you can have a straight-through paper path for heavier stock. I've successfully used this printer to send post-card thick paper through to print, yes, post-cards.
Easily and completely compatible with both PCs and Macs. Possibly the best B&W printer I've ever encountered.

Arkview USB 2.0 10/100 Ethernet USB 2.0 Print Server (1 Port) PC/MAC Review

Arkview USB 2.0 10/100 Ethernet USB 2.0 Print Server (1 Port) PC/MAC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I read all the good an bad reviews on this topic. Basically, it seemed that if people had a popular printer it supported, they were very happy. If not, it didn't work and they were unhappy.
I went through the process of trying to make it work with an unsupported Lexmark Laser printer. The setup software could see the printer (through my wireless network and the printer USB port, it could see which model it was) But it didn't want to install.
About to give up, I pulled out my old AirLink APSUSB2 printer server instructions. The process worked, but I believe you will have to set up a fixed IP address to go through this process. Make sure the fixed ip is above your router allowed HTPS list of address, and that it is a trusted IP on your home router/firewall.
After you have configured a fixed IP through Arknet's "Networking USB Server setup software," you do these basic steps for Windows XP:
In "Printers and Faxes" window, select Add Printer. Click Next
In the local or network printer window, select local printer, but don't select "automatically detect and install....". Click Next
In "select a printer port" select create a new port. In the pulldown, select Standard TCP/IP port. Click Next
A Standard TCP/IP port wizard comes up. Click next
In the "Add Port" window, Enter the IP address you have set the server to as discussed above, for example 192.168.150.254
Put in a port name. I overrode what defaulted tere and used port1. Click next
Under the "Additional Port Information Required" window, select the "custom" choice and hit settings
In the "port Settings" box brought up, leave the port and ip as is, change the radial button from "raw" to "lpr", and put your port name (port1) in the Queue name entry box. Select OK
You will be be brought back to the additional port information reqd screen. Hit next. Then Click Finish, to finish the port wizard.
Next, you will get the install printer software window. Hopefully you printer is already there and available through Windows XP (mine was). Otherwise you might have to access some driver files. Click next
I the "use existing driver" box, I selected existing driver and clicked next.
Under name your printer, you can change the name and choose whether you want it to be the default printer. Next
Then you can print a test page, and complete the installation. If the test page doesn't work, try it one more time after the installation completes.
I have little/no experience with later windows products, and so don't know if all these steps are easily doable in these products.
But it worked on XP and surprised me when it did. Thanks, Airlink, for providing the instructions for this workaround that Arkview didn't.

Sharp UX-B800SE Broadband Fax Machine Review

Sharp UX-B800SE Broadband Fax Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one slick piece of kit. Quite easy to to setup with a bit of network basics under your belt. Plug in phone line to a spare jack and then a CAT5 cable to a spare router port. I then manually entered static IP information into FAX machine (even easier if you use DHDP) and then setup options on FAX how I wanted it. To add, edit or delete email addresses, etc I then went to internet explorer, typed http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, which is the FAX machine's IP and used the internet based configuration page. Up and running in less than 10 minutes. I use PDF as the format and get pretty darn good quality documents. I used PDF because every computer should have adobe reader installed these days. Admittedly a bit more effort is involved to setup options specific to how you want to use it but I found it very, very easy to install and setup. No harder than any other FAX machine really.
I only FAX a few pages once or twice a week. For large business usage you may need to think twice on a larger more expensive make/model.
Pro : cheap price, duplexing, scans quickly, good scan memory size, relatively easy setup (maybe not so for a novice but instructions are clear and concise), don't have to use the somewhat expensive ink cartridges on the fax but have them go straight to email and then I print them on my laser printer ... the list of good points goes on and on and on ...
Cons : None so far

Ultimate Ears 200 Noise-Isolating Earphones - Purple Review

Ultimate Ears 200 Noise-Isolating Earphones - Purple

Again, I am impressed by the quality of Logitrvh products. have been happily using a Logitech V220 Cordless Optical Mouse at the office and a newer Logitech Anywhere Mouse at home. They are both great mouses (mice?).
The Logitech Ultimate Ears 200 Earphones live up to the Logitech reputation. As I write this review, I have the earphones in, sitting in my office listening to CCR. The sound is good. The stereo separation is even better. While, I am used to using headphones, the earphones have some obvious advantages. Notably, they are less bulky, small enough to fit into a small plastic carrying case, about two by three inches in size.
I should note that the earphones are noise isolating, not noise cancelling. They work by attenuation of background sound, not cancellation. However, they do a good job of it. There remains only one question. How do you get any work done with these things on? "Down On The Corner, out in the street, Willy and the Poorboys are playin'; Bring a nickel; tap your feet."

Sony ECM-MS957 Stereo Microphone with Rotating Mid Capsule Review

I bought this mike for use with my minidisc recorders, mainly to record choral concerts at church and in other places. It has a nice stereo directionality and separation choices, but I advise you to watch your record levels or mike sensitivity setting because the sound levels tended to overload on loud passages or with percussive music like piano when used with my recorder's default (high) mike sensitivity setting.
It's very solid and well made. I'd rather have a boxed carrying case instead of the soft pouch provided, but that's a quibble.

I am having the same paper feed issues as some of the other reviewers and it has been only a year (I print very occasionally). It worked great at first and I was really pleased it printed amazingly fast and I thought it was perfect for my needs. But now it is impossible to use, extremely unreliable, I never know when it will work or not. Paper feed stopped working and it does not matter what I do I can't get it working again.

The Samsung ML-2510 monochrome compact personal laser printer is an ideal choice for small offices or home offices with little extra space. The printer is so small it can easily perch beside your filing cabinet or right on top of your desk. The trim proportions of the ML-2510 ensure that it works in every place, every situation. Speed is another impressive aspect of the ML-2510. Clocking in at up to 25 pages per minute, its printing rate compares favorably even next to professional-grade printers.
With a resolution of 1200 by 600 dpi, prints come out clear and crisp. Bothersome paper jams that stall print jobs and make copying tasks a headache are now eliminated with the built-in jam-free roller system. The printer works with Windows XP, Macintosh OS X, and Linux operating systems. It has 8 MB memory and can be placed in an Ethernet network environment with an optional networking accessory. Measuring just 13.9 by 11.7 by 9.7 inches, the printer features a handy USB 2.0 connection.

This printer churns out pages in laser-sharp quality, scans quickly to a usb drive, copies quickly, scans and prints double-sided and easily works with both Macs and PCs over the ethernet network (although I did not try scanning over the network, so that may or may not work. I also don't use the fax feature because we have a dedicated machine for those increasingly rare times when someone uses a fax).
We've used this in our office for about a year, and so far I don't think the paper has jammed once. It's just a reliable performer that you don't need to think about.
The only problem I've had is setting up the email client for the printer. Supposedly, you should be able to email scans, but it won't connect with our email server.

NeatReceipts Professional Mobile Receipt and Document Scanner and Software Combination Version 3.0 Review

NeatReceipts Professional Mobile Receipt and Document Scanner and Software Combination Version 3.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This thing is amazing. In an attempt to become organized I have been trying out new software and methods lately. After some research I decided to give this little gizmo a try. I figured if I hated it I could always return it. No such chance! I'm in love with this thing.
Anyway here it goes.... This thing slices, it dices, it does it all. It's so easy to learn that anyone can get the hang of it.
It has three sections. One for receipts, one for 'documents' and one for business cards. Each section lets me create folders. I created folders like 'Ty's Tax Write-offs' and 'Electronics' and 'Home Improvement' in the receipts section.
I click on a 'Folder' and place the receipt in the scanner and hit scan. It pulls the receipt through. It recognizes over 1500 major retailers like Best Buy, Target, etc. If it doesn't recognize it, you type in the business name. Here's a cool feature; the next time you scan a receipt from that company the thing recognizes the receipt and names it by the correct business.
It picks out the tax, the total amount on the receipt and then reads all the remaining text and it indexes it.
This means that if I bought my ipod and scanned it I can type in 'ipod' or 'apple' and it finds the correct receipt. It's awesome. I have started scanning in all of our receipts past and present. Before we visited our accountant I scanned in all of our tax write-offs and ran a report on numbers.
You can click on a particular receipt and it brings up a copy of it. You can print it, pdf it, etc.
You can search by category, business name, amounts, anything.
The documents section is handy too. I'm scanning in all our loan documents, home documents, legal documents, extended warranty information, etc.
The program is amazing and in my opinion that is really what you're paying for is the program. The scanner is pretty great too though. It pulls through receipts of any size and shape with little problem.
Essentially what you're getting is an amazing high tech filing cabinet for $200.
To those that gave it low ratings... it's technology. No it's not perfect, but it's pretty darned nice for the price. I scanned in probably 60 receipts in the first hour and I was just learning how to use it. I would have spent that much time just filing them in a filing cabinet. I had few problems and overall it recognized probably 85% of the vendors and prices correctly.

We are a small family run farm and we go to farmer's markets every weekend plus we open up our farm for visitors and such. I needed something portable and within our very limited price range. Best thing is the wonderful job it does on taxes! We have food items which are a totally different price than our non-food items and now I don't have to go a bunch of extra steps at the end of the day. I also know what products are selling and making us money and which I can almost cut out or cut back on. Yeah - pushing the cash drawer to make it pop out can sometimes be a hassle, but one I'm willing to deal with - I found it prints faster with new batteries (which by the way seem to last forever!). I replace the C batteries 2-3 times PER YEAR and we use the machine every weekend almost. The smaller batteries which hold the information of the PLU's and such I don't change very often (maybe 1x per year). I am having a problem with the roller at this point - but it might just need to be replaced as it is now 2 years old. We are in the market for a 2nd one and recommend this one to a lot of people.

I've had this printer for about a year now. No problems at all. Works fine networked to Linux and Windows computers. Not as large as some, but the pictures don't show the paper tray jutting out the front...a requirement for operation. A little loud, perhaps, but only on start-up. Short time from hitting the "print button" to the first page. And that's my only complaint; it's ready to print so fast that it requires a hefty heating element for the fuser. This not only dims the house lights slightly, but it yanked down the house voltage far enough to overload my (admittedly cheapo) Conext 700VA UPS (and no, the printer was not plugged into the UPS). A better UPS remedied that. Interestingly, the printer's surge didn't affect computers that were not on the Conext UPS (or not on any UPS, for that matter). OEM toner cartridges are a bit pricey, but good for 3000 pages (the factory says). Still, hard to beat for the price.

Logitech's ULTIMATE EARS 200vi HEADSET is just what the doctor ordered. Lightweight, comfortable, and wonderfully functional, this headset won't disappoint.
I've used many headsets over the years (and ears!), and these are quite good, especially for the price. They fit great, sound good, look good, and are extremely comfortable, which is the most important point for me. Here are some other features you might find interesting:
- Frequency Response range of the ear pieces: 20Hz - 15kHz
- Impedance: 16 ohms
- Comes with 5 pairs of ear cushions and protective hard case.
- Comes with remote volume control and microphone built in.
- MSRP as of this writing: $40
I tested these on an iPod Shuffle and my Blackberry 8310. I also compared them to the old headset that came with my Blackberry and my husband's Sennheiser CX 500 headphones. I really can't tell you much about what the old Blackberry headset. They are fairly generic earphones that came standard will all Blackberries for several years. On paper, I have no idea what these headphones are supposed to be able to do. On the other hand, the Sennheisers can claim a frequency response range of 17Hz - 22kHz with the same impedance of 16 ohms. So on paper, the Sennheisers have a significantly broader range than the ULTIMATE EARS 200vi HEADSET . The iPod only has a frequency response range of 20Hz-20kHz, so this range is fully covered by the Sennheisers, but not by the ULTIMATE EARS 200vi HEADSET, which can't cover the top end.
But the proof of the pudding is in the eating so I tried all 3 of them on the Shuffle with some Blood on the Tracks tracks. As you would guess, the ULTIMATE EARS 200vi HEADSET lack of top end resulted in more bass than the Sennheisers gave me. That's not all bad, depending on your tastes. The old Blackberry set was the distinct loser of the 3 units with a muddier sound. The Sennheisers also don't have a mic or volume control so listening on a Shuffle with those was not nearly as convenient as with the ULTIMATE EARS 200vi HEADSET. But, the ULTIMATE EARS 200vi HEADSET did give me a very nice, clear sound, albeit with more bass.
For comfort, I rate the ULTIMATE EARS 200vi HEADSET the best of the 3 with the Sennheisers close behind. I've read a few reviews that use the phrase "shove them into my ear canal." That was not an experience I had to endure. In fact, the ear cushions that came installed on the Ultimate Ears fit me perfectly and when I inserted them into my ears no shoving was involved. They went in easily and felt very comfortable. My current headset is far less comfortable and after an hour or so, they give me a headache. I'm anxious to try the ULTIMATE EARS 200vi HEADSET out over the next week in work conditions.
The documentation for the Ultimate Ears says some features don't work with all phones but they worked with my old Blackberry just fine. The party on the other end heard me clearly and I heard them. What more can you ask for?
After spending an hour or so with the ULTIMATE EARS 200vi HEADSET, I have to say that I am impressed and plan to use them in my daily life. Since that involves a lot of phone time, the lack of a higher end frequency range won't bother me. But even for music, I'd be okay with it. For $40, these bad boys are a good deal.

If you're looking for a monitor that won't cause eyestrain, this is it; it has a reasonable pixel density so the words don't look really tiny, and yet allows for "side by side pages" work thanks to its generous size. The monitor uses amazingly little power, which also means it doesn't generate much heat - less than half the power of my old 22 incher, in fact. The one I got had no dead pixels, and the color settings were nearly perfect at the defaults (though for real color work, I do strongly recommend a calibrator for ANY monitor, particularly an inexpensive one like this.) The price was simply stunning for what you get.
My one complaint is the high-gloss borders -- if I wanted to see reflections, I'd have gotten a glossy monitor. But the nonglare screen works very well if you have windows nearby.
I am not using this to watch videos, play video games, watch TV, etc -- I needed a monitor with clear, sharp text, reasonable color accuracy, and day to day productivity benefits, and it has all those, with low power use thrown in.

Dymo LabelWriter 400 Label Printer (69100) Review

Dymo LabelWriter 400 Label Printer (69100)

Works great. I never used the included software though. I got sick of waiting in line at the post office so I bought this to print out postage. I use a software from my postage provider and can print out postage for any type of package. I just wish that Dymo offered a label for printing just the postage and not the postage with an address. I've figured that each postage and address label costs me 10 cents total (for both). Not bad really.
Another great thing about this is that it doesn't require ribbons or ink! It's not super fast at printing, but printing out a dozen labels doesn't take much time at all. Not fast, but certainly not slow.

For those who regularly ship through the USPS or even UPS, this little machine will save you time and money. It holds large rolls of labels and requires NO ink. There are no ink refill costs. With very few moving parts, there are less opportunities for malfunction or breakage. Used and refurbished units are generally a safe buy. I've been using a refurbished machine for 2 years and have printed thousands and thousands of labels with NO issues. I would suggest that one conduct thorough research as prices for these machines can vary greatly - especially for not-new machines. I would also suggest that users consider investing in better quality labels for shipping use. Cheaper labels seem to print less darkly than those that are higher quality. Lastly, extended exposure to intense sunlight or heat and the gum of most tape will darken thermal labels. To keep from losing your printed information (and addresses) refrain from taping over the labels and avoid extended exposure to intense sunlight and heat.
As far as specifics go, I use the Zebra LP 2844 thermal printer with a desktop PC and Endicia postage software.
